Rockbox update
comment: 0 | Thursday, February 10 (2005) 05:57AM | Posted by Lone
The guys at Rockbox have been hard at work creating an alternative firmware for iRiver H120/140 users, and as clearly evidenced by the new images on their site, they're making significant progress. Their early Rockbox firmware is now booting on the iRiver players, meaning shortly they can get into the real meat and potatoes of the project, like audio decoding, support for the LCD remote, etc. Great work fellas!

Is iRiver ok with them doing this?

Apparantly so, I was corrected when saying this was a bit dodgy territory for them to be getting into but it seems as long as they don't reverse engineer the existing firmware to do it then its ok.

iRiver has nothing to do with Rockbox. Doubtful they even know about it. Please remember that Rockbox is a standalone firmware and has no pieces of the original iRiver firmware in it. Once complete, the iRiver H100 Series and then H300 Series will truly be in a league of their own with True Gapless Playback, On the Fly Playlisting and the list goes on.

If you had that H120/H140 and sold it you should have kept it a bit longer.

Even if they were to reverse engineer the iRiver firmware exactly, there would likely not be a problem (under US law at least ) unless they infringed an iRiver or third party's patent.Trade secret protection offers no protection against reverse engineers and copyright infringement requires copying - something that you don't do when you reverse-engineer.

They really have no estimated release date, but I'd hazard a guess of anywhere between 3-6 months.
