Lexar LDP-800: Flash player with FM Transmitter
comment: 4 | Friday, February 11 (2005) 10:09AM | Posted by Austin Vaughan
The LDP-800 does it all, featuring an integrated FM Transmitter, FM Radio, voice recording, line-in recording, charge-over-USB, a built-in battery good for 14 hours playback, has an OLED screen and SD card slot, plus support for MP3, WMA, WMA DRM10/JANUS, and OGG codecs. Available at the end for March in 256mb (MSRP $ 160) and 512mb (MSRP $ 200) with higher capacities to follow later. Lots of good accessories come with it: MX400 earbuds, an external atanna, a case and lanyard in addition to the regular stuff. We'll point out that MX400 earbuds are one of the better models you can get, usually sell for $ 10 to $ 15 on thier own, and the bundled antanna is a nice touch.

The press release also mentions the player uses "Emersys EMX audio technology to provide a realistic 3-D sound stage while using 2-channel audio" ... whatever that means. Probably something like the SRS WOW effect used in iRiver and Samsung players. One other thing - apparently the FM transmitter function will not be available in European markets, likely due to strict laws that vary from country to country.

That's only MSRP dude. Has nothing to do with street price. The thing looks really sweet, and has really good support. Could be a keeper.

I've tried the LDP-600, and the FM transmitter on that one (even when you use the antenna) is not very good. Another big problem with the LDP-600 is that, although you could use SD expansion cards, to switch between the SD card and the flash memory you had to go into the menus and it was a big mess.

Hopefully these problems have been corrected with the LDP-800...

I callled the company and they will take your info, including your credit card # and they say you won't be billed until they ship it out. This was about a month ago, and the guy at the US Distribution centre said that they haven't gotten any yet and doesn't know when they'll come out.

Bad news boys and girls, just got this back from lexar:

Unfortunately, Lexar will not offer the LDP-800, but will focus instead
on its existing LDP Players that already offer appealing features and
benefits to meet a variety of consumer needs. Visit [Linky] to
purchase products available online.

Dammit, I've been twiddling my thumbs for a while waiting for this...

I got the exact same email from them a couple of days ago. Its disappointing as it appeared the LDP-800 had the potential to be a great player. Does anybody know anything about the newest line of Nike-Philips mp3 players that are supposed to have GPS tracking to be used while jogging? Nike has not answered my email.

I chatted with a support representative of Lexar, and she assured me that LDP-800 _will_ be released, around mid August.
The product is according to her definitively _not_ abandoned.

Hopefully, we will see a positive surprise!

I've been wanting one of these myself. I originally emailed them but never got a response. You would think that someone in the company would know what is going on. If they are planning to ship this month, they would have to be in production already.

Peter Williams: the player is in the testing process
Peter Williams: and it will be some time before it is released
Me: Ok, but it hasn't been canceled?
Me: There seems to be some general confusion. If you'd like, read the
comments on [Linky]
Me: It appears the answer depends, unfortunately, on who gets asked.
Peter Williams: yes, it is not to be promoted for some time
Me: Ok, well, thank you for the information.
Peter Williams: Is there anything else I can help you with?
Me: No, I don't think so. Thank you for your time.

I just called Lexar (US Sales number - 1-800-789-9418) because I'm getting sick of reading this discontinued crap - I was told that in the first week of September the LDP-800 is going to be released, they did NOT discontinue the product, in fact, the support guy I talked to laughed about it not even having been released yet and absolutely not discontinued.

Is Sarah Frost in the US office or some outlying satellite office that has absolutely no idea what is going on? Or worse, an outsourced support representative that handles calls in the evenings who would have even less of a clue? It is possible that Lexar is trying to prevent us from deserting the LDP-600 until next month, though I doubt it.

We'll know soon enough.

Also, yesterday, after calling and posting what is above, I emailed Lexar to see if I'd get the same response. Here is the reply:

Thank you for contacting Lexar.

From your e-mail we understand that you ask about the release of the LDP800.

Even though we did not decide the exact date,it is going to release very shortly

While the time we will update it in our website

If you have further issues, then please get back to us

While the English there is shoddy, it's plain to see that the LDP-800 is almost here.

I just checked the Tech Depot site and it listed the item as discontinued but my order was still showing as "accepted". I called customer service and he said it had been discontinued and he had no further information on it. He asked if I wanted him to cancel the order and I said ok. Minutes later the order status was showing up as "invoiced". I called back and was told the order had indeed been cancelled despite what the screen was showing.

I have to assume that it has been discontinued, otherwise there would be some mention of it somewhere on the Lexar site. Based on all the posts here, I think Lexar has handled this whole thing poorly and doubt I will buy any of their products in the future.

Being a glutton for punishment, I called the Lexar # on their website (Sales Information 1-800-789-9418). The courteous young man that answered said their was no mention of the item being discontinued, only that his system was showing the item was available since June but was backordered (whatever that means). I'm wondering if it did actually hit production but isn't currently available in the US?

I originally came here to find data on when the 800 might be coming out. Instead, I had the laugh of the day reading "Anonymous's" High Priestess Sarah Frost posts. You need to get a job writing for a sitcom somewhere. I almost don't care if the 800 ever comes out now, it's on-again off-again status with HPSF help made the whole ordeal worthwhile - just to read these posts!

Personally, I think Sarah Frost is the only one at Lexar with the balls to tell us the truth! Why else would their distributors be canceling orders and removing the products from their site. It's money in their pocket if it comes to market and you pre-ordered it. The only logical explanation is that Lexar actually did cancel the device and their marketing folks are keeping MOST of their reps tight-lipped.

That's just my opinion.

Can you guys start listing the number you are calling when you get these negative responses? I talked with the head office when I called - sounds to me like some internal rumors have gotten out of hand in the satellite offices or someone's trying to sell as many LDP-600's as possible. I can't see any reason whatsoever that they'd release the LDP-200 and not the LDP-800.

Also, typically, when a product that has a huge press release is cancelled it receives another small press release to let the world know. In other words, it would be all over every blog out there if it were officially cancelled.

The latest update on the elusive LPD-800

Please wait while we find an agent to assist you...
You have been connected to William Twist.
William Twist: Thank you for contacting Lexar. I will be assisting you today! How may I help you?
a s: I was wondering when, if at all, the lpd-800 was going to be released. I've been holding out on buying another player for this one, so I want to know when and if I'll be able to buy it
William Twist: Thank you very much for your interest in our products
William Twist: These are not into production for some time now
William Twist: Please do visit our website for any information on that
a s: Would you happen to have a time estimate?
William Twist: NO, we do not want to assure you on that
a s: So you have no idea how long it will be until it is released?
William Twist: no
a s: ok thank you

So, apparently, they are "not into production for some time", as opposed to "not being promoted for some time," said Peter Williams, above.

I was checking ebay the the other day and noticed a bunch of LDP-600s for sale. They were also for sale on several other sites. I was thinking of buying one since the 800 wasn't available and it suddenly hit me. I think Lexar manufactured a ton of the 600s and realized if they released the 800, nobody would by the 600 so they put it on hold. I'm thinking they may wait until they can unload the 600s they had, then go to production with the 800.

Just a thought.

I bought one of those the other day to tide me over....they were UK versions, with no radio transmitter (because it's illegal there). That was hidden in the fine print, so I was half ripped off...oh well, it's just to tide me over anyway, just a warning.

I had the same theory for a while, but I don't think so anymore. Ever since the release of the iPod Nano and Samsung's reduced prices on flash memory, I think Lexar may have been holding out to manufacture these until after the price drops on memory and possibly may be trying to strike a deal for some type of software for the thing. Anyway, still waiting...today is the day, though. The day I was told we'd hear an announcement.

Well, presuming one would split the month into thirds to define Beginning, Middle, and End, you would end up with the following
Begining = 1..10
Middle = 11..20
End = 21..EOM

I don't know if I'd believe them should they try to sell another delay story.

Well, this may not be what you want to hear but it is the only thing that makes any sense.
The LDP-800 is not being released because it is based on the same controller as their LDP-600 model.
And, well, the controller's design is apparently defective. They have not been able to stabilize it's operation with firmware changes. I have it from accurate sources that Lexar is not honoring their warranty on the LDP-600 because they are not able to supply a 'correctly' functioning replacement (or equivalent). We also have several units that are unpredictable and all of our inquires to Lexar regarding a solution have been 'completely' ignored.

These 'instabilities' include (in part);
1) Battery not charging (or not charging fully) during USB connection.
2) Battery level indicator doesn't show valid reading.
3) Unit suddenly stops playing.
4) Unit freezes during power-up and cannot be shut-off.
5) Resume function does not work reliably.
6) After recharging unit (disconnection from USB) and unit is shutdown, it will not power-on again.

The frequency of these 'events' seem to increase with the units usage. The LDP-600 should probably be recalled.

Well, I called the sales office and Lindsey, a very nice lady, told me that it would be released by November. She said there has been a little bit of a delay given promotional considerations. So, here's the hoping we're near the final round of delays. Honestly, if they don't push it out before December, they're going to have some issues. It's not like the rest of the market is sitting still waiting for Lexar's next move.

Well, this is something else to consider. Apple has put some hurt on all the flash-based players. These things use NAND as the backing store for the memory. It's the same stuff that's in the SD cards. The problem is Apple bought up a good chunk of the available NAND flash. There are companies that are modifying the products they are building to use a different backing-store system when they want that product to ship by the end of the year. So, we may not actually see a LDP-800 player before the end of the year. The LDP-200 is out, of course, since it has no internal NAND.

This is, of course, all speculation.

Yes, I had been speculating about that myself - though I've long since started doubting that's the case.

To the guy who sent me instructions on enabling FM Transmission on an EU model LDP-600: Are you sure this works? There are actual physical differences between the two models (namely the switch on the back that turns the radio transmissions on and off).

Well, I called them again since they missed their October deadline. According to the guy I talked to, it's definately not cancelled. He also doesn't think there's any problem with the unit, just that it hasn't been released yet. So, who knows what they're waiting for. He suggested I give them a call back when they have a specialist in, so we'll see if anything terribly interesting pops up with that.

Humph. "We have no information available on that at this time." When I asked her when they expected to be able to give an update, she said that she believed that when that was possible, they'd update the web page. So, maybe it's close... maybe it's not. Maybe it's time to look for another DAP.

Ok - I've been lurking here for a while checking things out - waiting for the LDP-800 to come out. After all, the FM transmitter has to be the coolest DAP feature ... but frankly, the world is passing Lexar by as they wait ot release it. Recently, I've been considering the Samsung Sansa m260 (4GB!) - which is also unavailable at the moment ... but should be available by the end of the month (fingers crossed) ... the lower capacity (2GB and below) are already available ... but I figure, why not go for the 4

Well, the big draw for me to this player is really the SD feature. I want to keep a smaller library of music that I can move between devices and sync with the larger library at home. I don't really think the world is passing Lexar by, the world is still stuck on iPod and nothing else is terribly successful. I'm still waiting.

I happened to be browsing a folder on my hard drive and found a pdf I had downloaded from somewhere back in January of this year. It was an LDP-800 data sheet that was published 12/27/04. At the bottom was the following:

Contact info: Lance Ohara, Director of New Products, 510-413-1215

Maybe he might know what's going on.

I did call for Mr. Ohara, but it seems that he doesn't know what's going on because he doesn't work for them anymore. The person to whom I was referred, "Doug," left a phone-message for me in which he said unequivocally that the LDP-800 "is not going to see the light of day." Ask me if you want the details.

Hi guys,
I have to say I laughed with tears for over one hour reading all the posts while I had some Brandy-chocolate.You guys are super. Now I'll tell you what I know.Since february I am in a continuous dialog with the Lexar's team..as one said: Sarah Foster...Timoth...random names.I was told EVERY TIME TO WAIT 1-3 WEEKS.I think there are just 2 people answering all this question and the answer depends of the time of day you are calling.I did so but was with no succes. Now I got this off Amazon's site : " 'Lexar Media LDP-800 256 MB Digital Music Player'/'Lexar Media LDP-800 512 MB Digital Music Player' scheduled for release in September 2005."So if they had this information, it means I suppose they will release it.Also I have a new phone number...hehehe so I'll call tomorow. The number I already checked is in use..God bless...so please feel free to call this lady:Diane..in charge with the new products at: 510-580-5604 and if your call is urgent you can call her on her cell: 408-921-7647.Please post her answers .I'll do the same.Maybe we'll figure out something more like that.

Get over it guys, it never really happened, and it never will never happen. There is no hope. Period. Not only does the LDP-800 not exist, Peter Williams does not exist. There were about three prototypes, and that was it. Dead. Kaput it's over.

Well, that's what we're trying to figure out, but we're still being given the old runaround from Lexar. It is my suspicion that Lexar, as a company, doesn't really exist. All this has been an elaborate prank.

Just came back from Lexar's website - note that the only MP3 there now is the LDP-200. The LDP-600 line is completely gone.

I don't care if the LDP-800 NEVER comes out, just give me a DAP with OLED, internal memory, SD capability, and an FM Transmitter....SOMEBODY!!!!!!

Any new information? Will Lexar be at this years CES? That may be a good time to get some info. I wonder what new products they'll pretend to be making this year. The only other player I found with a built in FM transmitter and some of the other features is the Nex3+. I'd still rather the LDP 800. http://www.the-gadgeteer.com/review/frontier_labs_nex3_with_fm_transmitter
