CeBIT 2005: Cowon iAudio A2 and X5 debut
comment: 17 | Sunday, March 13 (2005) 09:50PM | Posted by Austin Vaughan

Cowon has a giant booth this time around, now that they have some working models to show off. Back in January we found them at CES but all they had was mock-ups of their new players - the M5, X5, and A2.

The good news is that we finally got our hands on the X5 and shot about 50 pictures worth. The color screen and build quality are quite good. It's not too big or fat, and the joystick controller works well enough for navigation. The bad news is that they still haven't managed to work in an iD3-tag database, so browsing through content is file/folder based. Of course we asked about this, and they could only tell us that it's... very difficult. Strange, because they did manage to add a full-size LCD, color GUI, picture viewing, movie playback, and USB Host functionality to the long list of features already found on the M3. And like the M3, all your line-in, line-out, and power connections require the use of a dock or special cable that connects to the proprietary data port on the bottom edge of the X5.

We also got to see the one working A2 player in existance, though it wasn't 100% functional yet and we weren´t allowed to touch it ourselves. Screen quality, movie playback, and the GUI look very nice from what we can tell. MSRP will be around $ 400, IIRC.

The X5 will be available in the Korean market first followed by distribution in the US a month or two later, so figure another couple months wait, at least. The M5, a monochrome-screen version of the X5, will be out even later. It sounded like all thier energy is focused on the X5 right now as they had little to say about the M5. They weren't quite sure when the A2 will be available either, other than, soon.

Awesome thanks austin. One question, what was the speed of the device like?

Very interesting. Now that I see the 'now playing GUI' with album art, spectrum analyzer and (hopefully) some blank space for lyrics I may think about getting an A2... any pics to compare X5 and A2 sizewise?

Come on, guys, bring on those 50 pictures!

Btw... Anything about hte prices of the X5? A2 is cheaper than what I thought it'd be. But those look AWESOME! Good job, austin

Any reason for the dumb placement of the headphone jack ? That's really stupid....

The headphone jack placement is there to make the remote more comfortable. Check the M3 gallery.

Damn you iAudio, for manufacturing awesome hardware with a horrible interface.

Coronet... but the X5 won't have a remote, right? I mean, it's already got a screen... no reason for a remote.

At least the phone placement won't be as bad for square plugs (Shure's, etc.).

BTW, why do a lot of these companies go and ruin the simple elegance of their products w/ cheesy text like "color sound" written up by the lcd screen. WTF is color sound supposed to mean?I? Yes, the screen is color. Yes, it generates sound, more specifically, music. Many others at least say "digital music player" or something else on it. Really. Seriously. Come on guys. I'm so disappointed. I'm going to go cry now.

Well they may not have announced a remote but there is deffinately a remote socket. Maybe its supposed to be compatable with the M3 remote, or they will come out with a new one in the future.

The Size of the device is very nice. I've heard rumours of an x5l. if they managed to make this without making the top end thicker and just filling out the space of the thin end, that would be awesome.

Anyways....lets see those pics Austin

Mmm... ...Pavlovian reflex to drool when seeing Cowon products... ...enhanced by the colour images of CGI and real beautiful women. I must say that I wasn't a big fan of the remote control concept of the M3, but these look absolutely stunning.

But why does the A2 have an Avril Lavigne song playing while showing a picture of Mariah Carey? That better be just the Cowon people putting pretty pictures without knowing who the people are, and not some bug in the ID3 implementation.

The M3 remote works with the X5, according to JJ on the Iaudiophile.net. They probably won't package it in with the player though.

About the color sound, that is Iaudio's signature. Its on the I5 aswell. Thats just referring to all the effects I guess.

No ID3 Tag database? I don't really want to have to rearrange all my stuff into folders and playlists... I think that's just dumb.

I don't know, but since these products are with the Korean and South-East Asian markets in mind, I wouldn't be surprised if their featuresets use english words to have 'style' - but they have to keep them simple. They should pay more attention to America and Europe, methinks, but they don't.

I could happily live without ID3 tags (I'm an iriver owner and with massive startup times with the db, I've never used it!) but if they could make a high capacity version (60 gig) and somehow get both mp3 and ogg gapless I reckon I'd go for it. IT looks nice and my friend is very happy with his M3 so I reckon it'd be a ound choice. I'd definitely have to invest in an m3 remote though.

To anyone who hasnt owned a DAP b4, idv3 tag sorting seems like a good idea--only the start up times are atrocious.

Trust me, the Koreans and the asian ppl have been at this for a far longer time than you and they know what they want. I'm starting to see why Apple is so afraid of these Korean players. Once the wolrd starts maturing from its ipod infancy, korean mp3 players are the only way to go.

Is there a folder limit to the X5? I hate folder limits.
