Toshiba ready to make a comback?
comment: 17 | Sunday, March 27 (2005) 06:10PM | Posted by Austin Vaughan
We noticed that one of our affiliates, JR.com, has the Toshiba (Gigabeat) F-series listed for pre-sale. They've been around for some time in Japan - 6 months or so - but only Japan. To get one outside of Japan you have to go through an export specialist like AudioCubes.com, and it's quite expensive. However, we spoke to some Toshiba reps at CES, back in January, and they assured us it was coming to America in just a few months. We've heard nothing about it since so it was starting to look doubtful, but with the appearance on J&R's website we should see them arriving here within the next month or so. It's a guess, but a reasonable one judging from past experience with J&R.

There's more good news. It seems that the F-series players will retail for less than what Toshiba quoted us a few months ago. It's probably in response to Apple's price reduction on the iPod Photo, but whatever the case, it's good for us consumers.

F10 (10gb): MSRP $ 280iconF20 (20gb): MSRP $ 330iconF40 (40gb): MSRP $ 350iconF60 (60gb): MSRP $ 450
iconAvailable colors include Blue, Black, and Silver.

The 40-gig version looks like the best deal, with a price that matches the iPod Photo 30gb. Not only do you get get an additional 10gb but a bigger and better screen as well. Also, it looks like the player-dock will be included in the retail package, while extras like this were stripped from the new iPod Photo.
Some notes about the F-series from CES:
The color LCD on this player is one of the best we've ever seen, very bright and sharp with 320x240 resolution. The GUI makes good use of it too, with beautiful screen design and animated backgrounds. The main controller is a bit unconvential, that cross-like thing on the front. It's touch-sensitive but you tap at the tips like you would for normal buttons. In other words, it's not a "touch-strip" like the Zen Micro or iRiver H10. The only reservation we have is about Toshiba's music manager, a PC app that's required to load tracks into the player's database. We're hoping it's more like iTunes and less like Sony's SonicStage.

The 40-gig version takes the sweet spot, with a price that matches the iPod Photo 30gb. Not only do you get get an additional 10gb but a bigger and better screen as well.

Does that mean the Gigabeat series comes with a better screen than the ipod photo or that the 40gb version has a better screen that the 10 and 20?

also you have the F20,F40 and F60 all labelled as 20gb.

Me remembers the sweet-ass screen on those things. Secretly, me has always wanted a GigaBeat - but the F-series seems to be the best bet right now.

These players look so nice. I would immediately buy the 60GB version if it was gapless. Since it doesn't seem to be, I can only hope Sony updates its Vaio Pocket with a bigger drive and a smaller form factor (or make a Network Walkman with the Vaio Pocket navigation and screen).

oh btw... the screens on all F-series players are the same quality - "freaking awesome", to be precise. The 40GB just seems to be the best deal since it's basically an iPod Photo with better screen + 10GB at a very reasonable price - but the F10, 20 & 60 will show the same level of screen sharpness and clarity.

And fixed those labels, thanks for mentioning.

I just wish the battery life was 16+ hours. It would be nearly perfect then.

Are these like the iAudio's where the color corresponds to the storage size? That's how it seemed on that site.

I saw this listed on Computers4Sure about a week ago. If you check froogle there are a couple places that have it listed so hopefully it'll be out very soon. Anyone know if it does OTF playlists? I searched through the two news items but couldn't find anything.

Eh. No USB-to-Go. Maybe I ask for too much but both the ipod and the H320 can do that, and i really would like a convienent place to backup my photos. Plus, in Hong Kong only silver, blue and pink are available... Though we've had the player for a while.

i'm tempted to get one at these prices but the touch-controls are somewhat iffy and who knows about the software. we'll probably buy one for review if nothing else...

If I recall correctly, Gigabeat older generation player used to have removal harddisk ... I may be wrong.

nope, you're right - the first GigaBeat indeed had hot-swappable 5GB hdd's. Nifty feature, a shame the rest of the player wasn't that great.

wats up wit the prices...they are kinda high, but the differential is screwed up

10 gb - 20 gb = $50
20gb - 40gb = $20
40gb - 60 gb = $100

I understand the difference with 40gb to 60gb, cuz high-capacity small hds are very expensive...but what is up with the 10gb, and 20gb prices...20gb should be cheaper...wateva, i cant really change toshiba's mind!

It's available for next day shipping at ritzcamera. I was skeptical so I wrote to them and asked if that was guaranteed. Here is the response.
