Creative Zen now available for purchase (in Singapore)
comment: 18 | Monday, April 18 (2005) 12:57PM | Posted by Robert Sinke
The new member of the Zen family, conveniently dubbed "Zen" (just "Zen", nothing else), seems to be available for purchase now. In Singapore, that is. It costs some 509 Singapore Dollars, which translates to about $ 305, US currency.

We asked someone who had already been playing around with it for while, to supply us with a few impressions: "ugly", "not cool" and "dumb" came up a couple of times during that conversation. Well, we'll see soon enough.

I'm not really enthousiastic about the battery life of 11 hours. Too bad that the sizes are not published, I'm wandering if Creative has created a bulky player again, with a thickness of 24 mm or so.

nope, it's about equal to the 20GB iPod (v4) in thickness... well, a notch thicker perhaps - so I was told.

looks good. i cant quite picture the controols on this bigger than the zen micro though. in scaling up i would have kept the width of the touch strip and just uped the height.

wow so its really that that thin... Looking at the picture i wouldnt have thought it.

The micro was as thick as the iPod photo though (much thicker than 20g/G4) so i wonder how they managed to scale this down...

On the looks, it doesnt look too bad, but its nothing great judging from the pics... I liked the micro, but this looks like an awkwardly overgrown one.

Still, creative is going in the right direction. Better styling, better packaging, smaller units etc... so well see how their subsequent releases shape up.

Do you know whether its going to have a removable battery like the Zen Micro?

I would say that from appairent thinness - only judging by that one report - it is unlikely.

I have seen it personally here's my visual impression.

It looks like a blown-up Micro
It looks so much better than teh touch
It has a black back
It has the same pattern as the micro at the back
It comes in nice cardboard boxes (micro-esque) and not blister-pack of death
It doesn't cook your chicken
I think the 2g MD rocks. )

Well if creative follow apple... and we end up seeing second generation and third generations of, "zen" players... maybe they will take the majority of the dap market .... by whatever time they said when the threat was made...

Well from those pics it looks a bit thicker than iPod 20gb... And that thing might be a replaceable battery... but its a bit small isnt it?

Hmm

That white-looking Zen posted by Engadget is too ugly!

whoops, it does with a replaceable battery, so it seems - mixed things up there with that certain "other" upcoming product from Creative

It actually looks pretty nice on the site that has the black being all glossy and sleek. Doesn't seem to really be that way judging from all the other pics, but I don't think it's a horrible design. The interface on this and the mini has always seemed a little "boring" to me, though.

Not very competitive. It's still as a thick as a ipod photo 60GB, (40% larger thicker than a 30GB!) and costs roughly the same as the ipod v4 20GB ($2200 HKD or about $280USD). Doesn't have USB host or color that the X5 is promising, and that the color of the Gigabeat. It's alright if you need radio, recording and replacable batteries, but then say, the M3L has FLAC and a battery that lasts longer on one go, and a Karma has better connectors and is plenty cheaper, assuming that you live outside Asia.
