i-Station 2 coming up
comment: 8 | Wednesday, May 04 (2005) 10:14AM | Posted by Robert Sinke
We kind-of-already-knew some details, but those were a little too vague to publish, but now it seems that Korean Digital Cube has prepared its second generation PMPs for launch soon'ish. The well-known and heavily-praised i-Station will get its successor in the form of the "i2".

While this unit looks quite similar to the original design, there are some interesting differences to be noted. First of all, the i2 will likely be USB On-the-Go compatible and it'll probably have GPS installed. There's an in-line remote, rather than the current infra-red one and (as with the current device), there will be 20GB & 30GB versions available in both "white" (silver) and black colors.

Release date is set to May 23th for South-Korea, July 1st for overseas areas (because of localization matters).

Thanks, Tim & Josh
Now, there will be 4 different price ranges to choose from:

  • The "regular" i2 with the basic accessories will go for $ 400 / $ 480 (20/30GB).
  • The i2 "value" will come with extra accessories (such as A/V cables, a case and LCD cleaner) and will retail at about $ 480 / $ 555 (20/30GB).
  • The "i2 Plus" will add some other stuff to the package (additional battery, battery charger, leather case and whatever) and costs about $ 565/$ 645 (20/30GB).
  • Finally, there's the "i2 Navi" - this will probably be the complete GPS-enabled unit, including GPS receiver and car adapter; price is estimated at $ 599 /$ 679 (20/30GB) for this edition.
All of these are Korean MSRP's, so probably (way) above "western" prices if distribution will take place on a large enough scale.

From the danawa link, the i2 Navi looks promising with this spec:

"It will conceive, type the pack (the mammary gland li wool cone exclusion)"

Not sure what a "mammary gland cone exclusion" is, but I'm listening!

Yes, the online Korean translator is quite amusing. Not surprisingly it is still in Beta although I think even Beta status is pushing it a bit.

I heard the i-Station PMP1000 also supports USB On-the-Go. Can somebody prove me right or wrong? Anyway the original i-Station is really nice player and this one will be even better. I don't care about video recording, because there will be digital TV within 1 year in our country, so analog recording to the device would only degrade it's quality. I'll rather transcode my video files on my computer.

I just wish it had a larger than 30GB HDD. I hate having to choose what to put on.

I agree with wbc on the choosing of content to put on a pvp because of its lack in gigs... It might of been better for them to offer a low range pvp... say 30 gigs... then a higher one somewhere around the range of 60 gigs....

yea that's really the question isn't it? I-station crew always said that a recording feature would be implemented in updates and very soon aswell, but there's no mention of it. DAMN it I just got my gmini 400 a couple of weeks ago, must I already sell it!?

How can the video recording be added with a firmware update?
What about a video input for a start, not available on this device.
