Mo' MSI magic - MP-529, 535, 540, MV-566 Pro, 569, 571

Holy smoke. Not sure what MSI's up to with all of this, but on top of their MP-536, the company also showcased 6 (!) other, new units... plus a few (nameless?) prototypes. Where to start, huh? Let's pick a random number.

The Mega Player 529 (pictured above) is your typical huge-screen-yet-non-movie-compatible DAP. Ok, it does support motion JPEG, but we can imagine doing cooler stuff with that 2.5-inch TFT LCD. The 529 supports MP3, WMA and WMA DRM and comes with built-in FM tuner. Voice recorder's also included, and advertised battery life seems to be 12 hours per charge.

Moving on to the MP-535 (pictured above)... already looking a bit more interesting. Whereas the the 529 seems to be flash-based (or micro-hdd? who knows?), the 535 can boast a 20GB hard drive (1.8-inch) and line-in encoding. Great, now make it play movies and/or games.

Not sure what's the point of putting 3 different micro-hdd based unit into one's company's range. We've seen the MP-530 at CeBIT, which has probably been replaced by the already-mentioned MP-536 (pictured below).

But MSI thought it would be super-awesome to throw in another random number and fitting design, so we've ended up with the MP-540 (pictured on the left), offering little more than an 1.8-inch color screen TFT. Guess it looks nice and all, although it'll probably turn out to be very plastic-like.

You remember the MegaView 561? It was a nice attempt to come up with a cheap alternative to, say, any Archos PMP... but it miserably failed on almost all levels. The improved 566-version didn't get too much attention after that. Well, here's to hoping that third time is a charm - the MegaView 566 Pro (pictured above) seems to be quite the beast. On all kinda areas, that is.

Somehow, MSI managed to completely ignore the current logics-of-design and came up with a brick (screen) attached to a controller part. The screen is 3.5-inch in diameter, supports AV-in (recording) and -output and covers up the 20GB hard drive quite nicely. This Pro-version of the 566 supports MPEG-4 (SP), DivX and WMV. Supported picture formats include JPEG, BMP and GIF.

To finalize things, you can also listen to MP3 and WMA files through this animal. Next to this, there's your basic MMC/SD card slot and some built-in speakers. A powerful microwave feature has said to been scratched from the list because of high radiation levels.

But wait, we're not there yet! There's more, MSI truly wants me to die out of sheer typofytus, I guess.

The MegaView 571(pictured above) is packed with either a 1.8-inch, 20GB heavy or a 2.5-inch, 40 or 60GB heavy hard drive. An important aspect of this thing is its high-resolution (640x480, yet "only" 65k color) 3.7-inch screen. Supports MPEG-1, 2 & 4 (ASF, AVI, MP4) SP, DivX 3.11/4/5, Motion JPEG and WMV9. Want more file formats that can be swallowed by this apparatus? Ok, what about MP3, WMA V9, Janus, AAC and WAV? Yeah we like to smuther people in the coolest abbreviations, as always. Oh, also supports JPEG and BMP.

Good God. It doesn't stop there - help me, please - since the MV-571 truly is in a league of its own. Next to the SD/MMC card slot and USB-on-the-Go functionality, there's an optional BlueTooth module for wirless network connectivity. Furthermore, one can receive TV reception through the docking station. Naturally the 571 also records video and audio, it can capture screens from external sources and has a built-in FM tuner + recorder (*.wav) on board. Phew. Let's finalize this one by mentioning its battery efficiency: 3.5 hours for video and 7 hours for music playback.

*Finally*, we're at the end of the list... as far as confirmed products are concerned. The MegaView-569 (not pictured) seems to have a lot in common with its CeBIT-exposed sibling, the MV-567. There's a 7-inch, 65k color screen that supports resolutions up to 800x480. Supports MPEG-4, WMV9, DivX, ASF, AVI, JPEG, MBP, GIF, and possibly some form of WiFi and GPRS. There, couldn't put it more compact than that.

Ok, you can have these ones too... Pictured above are some concept designs... Obviously flash-based units sporting teeny-weeny color screens and all. The MP-529 (pictured on the right) looks kind of humongous next to these two.

Woah. What's going on with the dodgy 80's porn pic being used as a publicity image?

... or is Robert having some fun with photoshop again?

"supports AV-in (recording) and -output"

Starting today, any a/v player that does not support a/v output should be summarily ignored.

@flid: hehe... it wasn't me. Hoped someone would notice though. Kinda odd, but then again... releasing a gazillion new DAPs/PMPs at a time does strike some similarity to a certain gangbang-industry.

@nym9: that'll prove awkward... ignore the X5, YH-J70 for instance? Hmz. But I get your point, it doesn't make much sense having to watch heavily pixelated converted WMV files on a 1.5-inch screen (random number) or something.
