DAPreview scoop: Creative Zen Vision - it's the "PMC plus", and compact at that
comment: 5 | Wednesday, June 08 (2005) 07:48PM | Posted by Robert Sinke
Ehm, this is new to us. Creative seems to be busy keeping itself busy (huh?), these days. After the Neeon and the 20GB Zen, there's this portable media player called "Zen Vision". Looking for Australian price levels on the Zen Neeon (yeah, we get the strangest requests through e-mail every now and then), we stumbled upon this particular device while browsing some Ozzie shop called "mp3direct".

The current Creative PMP, the PMC-120, never really caught on with a large public. It's priced pretty steeply, doesn't really do all that much and it's not any pocket-friendlier than the bulk of its competitors. Creative wanted some revenge, we guess.

So what is known about this "Zen Vision" then? Named website lists a bunch of (preliminary) specs and features, so let's just sum those up.

  • Capacity Size: 30GB HDD, 1.8-inch
  • Built-in Compact Flash slot
  • Audio Formats Supported: MP3, WMA, and WAV
  • FM Radio: Yes, Internal
  • Enhanced Sound: 8 Preset EQ
  • Voice Recording: Yes, Direct Encoding: No, FM Radio Recording: No
  • Video formats Supported: MPEG4, WMV, Dvix, XviD
  • Picture support (JPEG & TIFF)
  • Display: 640x480 pixels 64,000 Colour 3.7-inch TFT-LCD Display
  • Interface Type: Buttons, multi-directional control
  • Connectivity: USB 2.0 (USB 1.1 Backwards Compatible)
  • Internal Microphone: Yes
  • Battery: Internal Lithium-Ion Rechargeable
  • Battery Replacement: User Removable,. Rechargeable: power point or USB
  • Unit Dimensions: 124.2 x 74.4mm x 20.1mm
  • Unit Weight: 232 Grams (with battery)

Seems it still doesn't support video-recording, sadly enough. However, it's way more compact than the PMC-120 ever was (144 x 80.7 x 27 mm), as well as pretty lightweight (PMC weighed 340g, so the Vision weighs about one iPod Mini less). In fact, this makes it one of the more compact video players around, and that while offering a 3.7-inch screen and all. Weird thing: it's also some 40 bucks (well, 50 Australian bucks) cheaper than its predecessor, while offering 10GB additional storage capacity. We're talking about a price just below 700 Australian Dollars (435 Euro while we're at it).

Looks like that this device will come available at the end of June. We'll keep you posted if more information pops up.

Looks really good, actually. Seems like they got rid of the Windows Media interface and added DivX, yeah!

although they're very secretive about it, somehow, I'd assume it does support video-out. It would kinda foolish if it didn't.

435 Euro is about 532US, but it might be even cheaper than that when it gets here.

Well, it's smaller, sleeker, has higher capacity, more vid formats, and more features than the old PMC. Good work Creative.

Very nice player

"435 Euro is about 532US, but it might be even cheaper than that when it gets here. "

If it's 435 Euro then it will be about... 435 USD (in most cases)

Hey, Poekoek gets the system That's right, you can take Euro porices and use them pretty much as a 1:1 guideline for USD prices. Not sure how it works if Australian stuff is rolling through the mechanism, but we'll see.

Oh..finally a new Zen coming!
But why no FM recording? I think its easy to add feature to make ZV can record the FM. I still curious about the battery life while playing the video. Its very cheap for all that feature....

Thanks Robert, for the review. I am waiting the complete story of ZV. Do you think that it would have a 60 or 80GB hardddisk too?

good thing we've scooped it up then And sonne, I don't think 60, let alone 80GB is in the works... It's a 1.8-inch hdd. Kinda cost-ineffective.

The 3 circles on the back is the new Zen Logo. It is on the back of the Micro.

Why The nEw ZV is only equipped by 1800mAH battery compare to The "old" PMC 120 which has 3600mAh. Is possible to replace the standard 1800 into high-cap 3600 or even 4400mAh?

The creative.com still not have the information about the New ZV.

I am waiting.....

ah i forgot to add.
i think the PUI (product user interface) is pretty nice, they simplified and cleaned up a stereotype of interface that everybody is expectiong for this kind of devices. it looks essencial or at least newer or at least re-thought over.
what i dont like is that it seems the button have been thrown in. theyr position could have been fixed and the material selection is a bit mismatching to me.
silver ring gives me a very cheap inpression above all because it is going to me cheap plastic colored to look good...
my personal evaluation after all i would save it with some reserve.
ciao

Creative has put the device back on its webpage! And it appears there are a few changes. Instead of a 16 bit, 65k color screen, it now sports an 18 bit, 262k color screen. Good news indeed.

I'm thinking that whis will turn out to be exactly the same as the PMC just with a different look w/ more space and other features. As so, it will work fine for the first few months you use it for. After those few short happy months it will break and break and break to eventually it will just stop working. Go to "http://forums.creative.com/creativelabs/board?board.id=pmc" to see the bad feedback many other people who actually OWN a PMC/PMP (portable media ceenterer/portable media player). The Zen Vision is just going to be another pathetic attempt for Creative to steal lots of money from peoples' pockets.
