iRiver U10... 8GB through 1-inch hard drive?
comment: 19 | Monday, July 25 (2005) 08:37AM | Posted by Robert Sinke
We speculated about the possibility of iRiver's U10 appearing in high-capacity editions a while ago, and guess what we found today: a template page for the 8GB U10. No price being mentioned over there yet, but the webshop is also offering the "regular" 512MB & 1GB editions of the U10... what's the point in plunging random figures and numbers in there, right?

The page mentions a 1-inch micro-hdd being used, which could trim the price down to bearable levels (iRiver was said to consider the use of flash memory for the high-capacity versions as well). Given the fact that the 2GB version has also popped up already, and costs about 279 Euros ("available in August")... 8GB worth of flash memory would probably be "a tad" too expensive . Also, this 8GB thing is a bit thicker in size than its flash mem-based counterparts - 69 x 47 x 21 mm vs 69 x 47 x 16mm. Still compact enough, I guess.

No indication on release date, unfortunately.

UPDATE: an anonymous user has brought it to our attention that the webshop has recently added an estimated release date for the 8GB version... "October", that'll be next October then.

An 8GB version of that might be pretty cool, the lower capacity ones aren't really going to be worth it to me really but almost 10GB in something this cool looking would be pretty tempting.

Now I'm interested!
Can they use a standard USB2 port too?

anyone know if there any disadvantages to flash memory over HD-based memory (apart from price) at the larger end capacity?

Slower transfer transfer speeds with some flash memory.

As long as it doesn't end up as crappy as the m:robe 500, I might pick up one.

8 gigs is more like it, when I first heard about this player I thought it was awesome, untill I saw the memory specs... but 8 gigs... that's a start at least

U10 is definitely the best thing i've seen in a while. It's going to be crazy expensive though.

Don't know where you saw October but the PDF releases in both English and Deutsch both say mid August. Mind you, they also say the 2 Versions are 512mb and 1gb, whereas the specs pages on both English and German sites say 1gb and 2gb .

R U Crazy> I remember looking some screenshots of U10 before and the player didn't had a standard USB2-mini connection. But I maybe wrong... can you point somewhere showing the standard connection? That'll be great!
