iRiver U10 supports portrait mode
comment: 38 | Saturday, August 13 (2005) 10:33AM | Posted by Robert Sinke
Well, another cool gimmick in the impressive line-up of iRiver U10 weirdnesses: it can switch from landscape to portrait mode. I'd say that makes it an ideal unit for displaying Raptor or Tetris-like games. We do know that the U10 will support games already, so why not huh?

Other than that, it's also nifty feature in case there's a looooong list of tracks, options, menu items or whatever. Man, this thing is quite hot. I need two without even knowing why. And with the 8GB Micro Photo coming up... the rumored 8 gig version of the U10 could turn out to be very real soon enough.

I hope this doesn't launch with a dozen bugs, like iRivers other recent flagslip model. If it doesn't, I'll have some faith in the company's ability to innovate, cos this will be something truly innovative AND usable.

Guess it'll be MTP at first, seeing how they bundle WMP10 with it. But a fw upgrade will probably take care of that, juts as it did for the H10.

it's not like we've got one to check it, at this point My guess would be no removable battery and like I said, WMP10-compatibility, so drag&drop for Windows OSes.

I heard that a lithium polymer battery lasts approximately 4+ yrs... true?

Sebhelyesfarku nothing ever good comes out of your mouth unless it's about the old outdated Rio Karma. iRivers are getting more and more popular and not because they are looking like iPoo but people actualy see that the hardware is actually better. The U10 is going to be a hit and i'm thinking of getting one. Now quit being a sore loser becuase Rio adanboned you. Sorry if i'm a bit harsh but you seriously need to shut up. WhoCares umm lithium polymer batteries do last a long time and they give better battery life too. The old iRiver HDD players used lithium polymer. The newer ones use lithium ions which sucks. It's good that the U10 will be using the better battery.

I remember Seb saying he liked the old H1x0 series (except for "no gapless", of course). I also remember you mocking some iAudio player because it had "shitty battery life" and a joystick or whatever, h0p3l355is4, suspecting others of "hating" the T10. Guess we all have our own opinions.

However, maybe we should add a new button called "insert Seb shout" here. "No gapless", "stupid equalizer", "iPoo", "paperweight", "it looks like a toy", those pretty much being the main outputs for that one. Hm, I imagine seb merchandise, t-shirts screaming "No gapless?" on front and "paperweight" at the back. Or iPoo-shaped paperweights. Or limited edition Cowon X5's, without proper equalizer - the X5ebhelyesfarkyu.

There was a firmware update that made the H10 MSC?

Yeah i guess we all have our opinions. It was only that one iAudio 5 i couldn't stand. The others seem convincing. Seb on the other hand hates all. He will never be able to accept defeat.

The U10...mmm...first small form factor pmp-like thing I've liked since the Archos...well...forgive for not knowing the name, there are far too many weird DAP names floating around. The 400 thingy.

And yes, Lithium Polymer battery's DO last longer than Lithium Ion, but as I understand it...they also lack the memory problems that Ion batterys had. Ion was of course supposed to lack a charging memory: heard that one before...NIMH anyone?

Also...wasn't the H10 MSC compliant from the start? I thought it just had the weird "press menu, select....whatever" while turning it on to make it MSC. Didn't think they actually added REAL support with firmware update...could be wrong on that one.

So is the U10 coming in both flash and microdrive versions? If so...wouldn't we see a major difference in battery life, and weight?

seb soesnt like the karma, its too "fat", whereas he wants something "slim",
To h0p3l355is4 do explain to me how the karma is "outdated", i do not believe that it is, as a matter of fact it trumps most of the new DAPs out there at the moment.

h0p3l355is4 you are the loser because you'd buy an audio player not capable doing such a basic thing like playing two tracks countinously :oP and I don't care about brands, anyone who makes a slim, reliable (Karma is out), gapless, audiophile player (all other players are out) will get my money

Robert the t-shirt merchandise first sounds good, but soon have to realize that no chance against the iPoo socks :o)

All I know is the options for my next dap continue to improve. Sometime in the fall (or whenever all the candidates on my list are out) I get to choose between (1) M-Cody Mx400, (2) iRiver U10 2 gb flash, (3) iRiver U10 8gb hd. Gee, maybe I should buy all three. yum..

Seb tell me what the PERFECT player for you is. I mean not a lot of players out there can do gapless. I think. Not a lot of people care. I think. My H10 is almost gapless. About audiophile players. Have you even tried the players before you criticize? Quit being an ass. Enough is enough. There are many slim, reliable, audiophile players out there. Gapless however is not common because it is not as important as the rest you stated.

Hmm i'm guessing the 8GB (if it is planned) will cost around $400? If 512MB is $200. 1-2GB will be $300. Let's all pray the 8GB will be affordable. I noticed they removed the 512MB iFP-1000 off iRiver America site. $300 for 512MB! Ouch.

your right gapless isnt an important feature, because it shouldn't be considered a feature.....gapless should come as standard, simple as that. I am in no way an audiophile, i'd be more inclined to be called a musicphile or something, but gaps that should not be between songs really suck, esp. for live albums, i hate when listening to a live album with the crowd cheering and then silence then cheering again, it totally wrecks the ambience.
