Creative MuVo Vidz - itz notz so newz after allz
comment: 21 | Wednesday, August 31 (2005) 07:54AM | Posted by Robert Sinke
What's this then? Yet *another* flash player by Creative? Why, yes it is - it's the MuVo Vidz. Or is it? This thing looks _an awful lot_ like the Sorell SF-3500. Even better - it's exactly the same in size (32 x 66 x 15.7 mm), weight (33 grams), capacity (512MB, 1GB... Sorell also came in 256MB) and feature set (as in "it supports video playback", MPEG4/DivX). The only thing that got scratched from the list is... drum roll.. Ogg Vorbis support.

Fool us once, shame on us. Fool us twice, shame on you (or was it the other way around? What do I know?). Kenwood has done it the vice versa way once (rebranding Creative's stuff)...but this is rather unique, as far as I can recall.

Hey, Creative does it all the time, just look at the Rhomba Series:

They need someone new in charge of their naming department. "Vidz" "Sleek"
It's dumb.

You can tell it's not an 'original' Creative 'cause it has a joystick instead of their scroll lever deal.

oh boy, ogg vorbis playback is the one main feature i look for in a DAP. back in the summer of '03 when i ripped by 500 cd's to .ogg it was quite the gamble, i had my eye on the Neuros for a long time, but now I've got a lot of options. But there's no excuse for supporting DivX but not ogg vorbis. rrrgh.

Yay, yay, let's pay an extra $0.75 for every mp3 player,

does anyone know what the added royalty of a Plays For Sure or ASF is? is there a fee?

I won't buy a DAP if it doesn't support OGG.

Same here, Shiftis and 1e. I have all my CDs ripped to OGG, too. It's quite handy for really large collections, where even just a little bit of saved space is worth it. Not to mention the better sound quality. Maybe it's not so supported simply because it is open-source? DAP makers don't wanna take a chance that the codec changes, and then their players no longer support the format? (Just wild guesses =P)

i don't use vorbis, i have used before, for about 4 months, but i decided that its much too over rated, drains battery too much, and isn't supported enough anyway, also one of vorbis' tricks is to increase the pitch of sounds, making the .ogg file louder, which isn't always such a good thing. Mp3 with lame is the easiest for me, but i'd prefer just to have everything in flac,,,if only i had a 1 terabyte 1.8"HD

A 1TB 1.8 inch HDD would be unbelievably great.

Heh. Was I the only one that immediately thought "Rio" upon seeing the joystick and surrounding red? (Sorry; still caught up in the news.)

musquito, yeah indeed it looks quite different now. Still, that previous news item pretty much speaks for itself.

they probably just wanted a video-supporting flash player "off the shelves", saw the awesome SF-3500 at our site and got to work.

Lol, the wrong link was in this news item all day long. Sorry for any confusion. You can check out our original SF-3500 story here: [Linky] , which has been enclosed into the above news item as well.

I am sorry to say that but even here people look at brand name first and if they do not know it, they do not bother. Look at the number of comments under this article from May. 3 comments. Such a marvellous piece of electronics. And no-one bothered...

My point is Sorell might have produced good product but they must have been unable to sell it. So they sold it to somebody who can. I honestly cannot see anything wrong with that.
Number of comments to this news proves Sorell did right: If it say "Creative" people read the news and may buy it so that Sorell gets its share too. If it is Sorell, who cares.
Digital Cube is great. It is class of its own. But I wonder how many people here in Europe have ever heard of DC. So this is the same scenario. I like the SF-3500 design and feature set but I would never bother about a brand name like Sorell if I did not came to place like this forum. In my opinion it is Creative's another smart move.
