Btw, i noticed that there are the letters A, B, C at the bottom of the screen and also the buttons A, B, C at the side. Any idea what that's for?

that's your typical Archos interface, as seen on the Gmini and AV4 & 5. Context-sensitive buttons, so you can see on your screen what each button is supposed to do in that particular section.

It seems such a waste to only have 30gb
4mm extra could have brought 60gb or even 80gb...

That's a sexy little machine. I kinda like the graphics. I really like the audio player GUI. It's hard to belive that they get such good battery life while running that gigantor screen.

"Over here" is most likely South Korea.

Quite obvious isn't it?

Why no MPEG2 support?

It's obvious where they put that extra battery power. Just compare the size and weight of this thing to, say, the Zen Vision...

is anyone else sceptical about the screens advertised 32 bit color after seeing those images? the gui looks like its only 32 or 64 colors, and looks like trash compared to what it should be able to.

It's 24 bits, not 32 bits (no screen is capable of transparency), and it is possibly a 18 bit panel using dithering or frame-rate control to achieve 24 bits. But in either case the picture should still be exceptional. I think the blame is with the camera used to capture those pictures. If one were to look at other objects in the photographs, one could detect significant amounts of grainy distortions. I think there's really no need to doubt official specifications at this point.

my comments wern't based on the cammera at all just the fact that none of the icons or gui elements had any true gradient just a low color speckely transition. like an image would look if you saved it as a 32 color or less .gif seems to me that it would be an odd choice to design them like this so thats why i was questioning the screen. also my monitor must be awsome because its set at 32 bit color . . . im betting yours is too though have a look.

32bit is indeed the default setting in most systems nowadays but the 8 bits of alpha channel is ignored by the monitor entirely. It is only used internally by the software. But you are right about the curious look of the low color depth of the UI. I was looking at the movie being played back on the screen and I thought it too suffered from low color depth. For that reason I was hoping that this would be a result of poor lighting, old camera, bad viewing angle, or something of that sort. But alas! if it turned out this device has a poor quality screen, then that's the end of that.

I don't claim to be an expert, but take a look at the objects in the background of the photos.
I'd agree with Chirality here - for example, look at the first picture, on the left hand side is the the blokes thumb. Grainy!
And I doubt that in real life he only has a 32 colour digit! Crappy compression on the photos, methinks.

Wow...I can't believe I didn't notice this before, but all the pictures here are...wait for it...GIFs! All that graniness are results of terrible dithering. Somebody please introduce the wonders of JPEG compression to whomever is responsible for posting those pictures.
