New Philips players: HDD1630 (6GB) and HDD6330 (30GB)
comment: 2 | Thursday, September 01 (2005) 10:56AM | Posted by Robert Sinke
Woz this? New players by Philips? And this even includes a 30GB model? Halleluja, miracles still exist. We already reported on the hdd095 going up from 3 to 4GB, as well as the new PSA line-up... but the HDD1630 and 6330 (sounds like a Nokia phone to me) kind of came out of the blue.

The HDD1630 is a 6GB player, the 6630 a 30GB one (supposed successor to the hdd120, about time). Both of them have this backlit touch strip thingy, a nice (bit small in appearance) color screen that allows picture browsing (slideshows accompanied by music as well) and album art and the usual set of Philips stuff - SuperScroll, ID3 library-type'o'browsing and playlists-on-the-go.

Battery life is far from skimpy, theoretically speaking: 15 hours max for the HDD6330 and 18 hours for the HDD6130 (speed charging up to 70% battery capacity in one hour supported). That oughta do for most of us. There's also an integrated FM tuner in there, as well as a voice recorder.
PlayForSure compatibility is included in the package deal. Seems like there are a couple of accessories worth mentioning too: a splash-proof case with "integrated control pad", plus a docking station that can act as a recharge, AV-out (tv and audio) and data transfer (USB2.0) base. Comes with a remote control. Not sure if these things support USB-Host, but the press release mentions "GoGear mini-USB camera cable to download pics from a digital camera". So there you go.

The GoGear HDD6330 and HDD1630 will be available in October 2005 and will have a suggested retail price of $ 299 and $ 199 respectively. (ok, that was a copy/paste line).

Update: more info found over at PcMag.

"The 30GB HDD6330 will have dedicated buttons for controlling music during slide shows, as well as a USB On the Go port for directly connecting a camera or other USB storage device. It will also have a 2-inch 16-bit color LCD, measure 2.52 by 4.09 by 0.66 inches (roughly iPod-size), and weigh 5.3 ounces. Also included in the 30GB model is a TV output so you can watch your slide shows without squinting at the 2-inch screen.

The 6GB HDD1630 measures 2.11 by 3.39 by 0.64 inches (you guessed it--approximately the size of an iPod mini) and weighs about 3.1 ounces. The screen is a bit smaller too, at 1.5 inches, but unlike the iPod mini, it is a color screen, and the device will support photo viewing. You can view slide shows with music, but unlike with the larger model, you can't control the music during a slide show. Battery life is rated at 18 hours. An optional audio-only dock will be available for the HDD1630 - and since the device has no TV output on it, you'll be out of luck if you want to watch slideshows on a big screen."

Seems like they've redubbed the hdd095 into HDD1630. Pictured above is the HDD6330.

That is a pretty player. Uses a cradle (with remote!) for video out. I wonder what the dimentions are?

So which player is that that's pictured? Or will they look the same? (More than just having the same touch-strip design)

Looks nice on the pic but I'd rather see some live pics of it first. Coz on the the official pics of the hdd120 i thought the it looked realy different than in real life. On the official pics I couldn't even notice the 2 chrome metal strips.
I kinda suspected a successor to show up coz the hdd120 kinda started showing up here in stores for 199Euro. I guess philips is trying to get rid of their last ones and where else beter to begin as in their beloved 'neigbourcountry'. Belgium that is.

Probably will be a fingerprint magnet on the front, but still, Philips shows they're one of the best in DAP designs.

Looks good.
I hope they have a USB connection directly in the player and it doesn't need software to upload music (MSC compatible).
USB charging would be good to.

It looks great, seems to have most of the features that anyone would need but none of that matters because philips' philosophy seems to be 'make a product and then forget about it'.

If you decide to buy this product keep in mind that philips cares little for the opinion of its users and as such any online community will slowly die out of sheer disgust for the company.

I miss my creative njb1 and the flourishing online community that came with it. With my hdd things just arent the same:(.

Very pretty indeed. I loved the HDD1x0 when it first came out, but was put off by bad reviews and a supposedly terrible / buggy software interface (worse than sonicstage!). Is it likely to be using the same horrendous DMM software?

Sounds like the "extras bundle" is pretty sweet aswell. I hope the cradle remote is IR/RF and not hardwired. Mmmmm... more conceptual sweetness.

Definitely want to see more pics and specs though.

Wow, I liked the HDD070 but this is one seriously gorgious player. I wont buy it as I want a PMP but I will recommend it to friends.

even come with canalphone earbud, a player that may not need better earbud depending on the listener!

ooooh... $199/$299 ain't too bad for something like this. those are in usds i suppose ?

is it just me... or am i the only one turned onto the colour ui look?! i haven't seen anything slicker, well apart from the sony pocket vaio/gigabeat... i mean the black on black and the bars reminds me of one of those osx skins? regardless... so far looks like a nice plus touch up for them. btw, i haven't seen
colour screens outdoors yet... are they visible ?!

just a lil more tidbits...

~ hope the 6 gig HDD1630 stock the canal phones too
~ lets get the software right... c'mon philips !
~ yay... otf playlisting !
~ reminds me sorta of that new zen micro face plate one

i have high hopes for this one... anxious to see how this goes !!!

whats with all these companies suddenly springing up new players? i mean, its nice to have alot of new stuff to look at but its kinda unexpected. as for this player, its touch pad looks alot like the mrobe's. for the price it might be worth

Looks very promising, but as always the devil will be in the details.

I guess the software will be the biggest worry.
d'n'd would be great.
I'd like to see ogg support too.

We can expect a review from you in October, Chicubs?

Now that I am seriously thinking about it, I dont know. Rob, if any of us, has the best chance of getting a review unit since hes the local boy and I dont know if I want to shell out $300 bucks for a product that very welll might be a beta product. Philips doesnt support their products, and owning a hdd120 was pretty frustrating -- i loved mine and it never froze, but it had so much unfufilled potential.

This, to me, looks like a HDD120 mixed with an mrobe 100!!! PERFECT COMBO! Man, I am so excited about this, being an owner of an HDD120 myself. All y'all can stop complaining about the software because the latest iteration of DMM has never crashed on me or done anything funky or unexpected. It works FINE to get the music on the player. All I'm worried about is battery life because my HDD120 only lasts a few hours thanks to the white LED backlight that sucks juice like you wouldn't believe.

Very nice looking player, and if it had a cheap price, and a decent GUI, I would pick this up for sure. Maybe just wait a little bit after it comes out. I'm looking for a new DAP (to go along with my Karma) but I'm looking at the X5, or just waiting.

Sorry to "do the Seb" but does it do gapless? Did the HDD120? Pretty sure it doesn't which is a shame cos it looks good otherwise.

I might go for HDD6330 in Oct unless I find out that its got the same weak ass amp as the Hdd1xx does. Maybe Philips will give this one some more punch.

ed, you make a great point. I forgot about the weak headphone amp. And is the inclusion of canal phones a subtle hint that you'll be needing the extra volume and noise cancelling? hehe

Looks promising, especially the 30G at $299 and at that size. Will the battery be replaceable? It says PlaysForSure, so I'm betting it shows up in windows as an MTP device, not MSC/UMS. Still, you can drag and drop in windows explorer and sync with several programs. I like the freedom of choice in that regard. But does the PlaysFoSho extend to subscription services? Please?

Now I just have to decide between the Creative Zen 20GB or this HDD6330 30GB. Thank God they both have FM & Mass storage... finally!

Only thing I can think of that might cause a nusiance is the Philips doesn't have any tactile feedback.

Can we have some software & output quality tests Please. So I can finally buy my first DAP ASAP.
