Stress-testing the iPod Nano...
comment: 13 | Monday, September 12 (2005) 10:42AM | Posted by Robert Sinke
Jeez. The guys over at ArsTechnica went through some lengths to test the breakability of the new iPod nano. Lots of people have expressed concerns over the nano's vulnerable appearance (because it's... thin... and all), so ArsTechnica dropped it on the concrete a couple of times - from various heights and at variable speeds, using a variety of vehicles (legs, bicycle, car... what, no APC?).

Driving over it only killed the LCD, and that's no good. It took a 40 ft. free fall onto the asphalt before nano's ghost finally smashed right into the grave. Of course, ArsTechnica took the opportunity to dissect the whole thing as well after all of this.

Don't try this at home with your Karma, kids.

It could be worse, like cell phone owners dropping their phones in the toilet and call for customer service. Hopefully many DAP owners didn't drop their player in the toilet. Sorry, silly thought.

Actually, I believe that it's happened several times.

Not surprising, as damage usually comes from components with empty space being crushed. I have a flash drive you could run a steamroller over and it'd probably still work. Compression won't affect it, but a bending motion would.

I read the article. Pretty funny, really. You're right, bending is probably the worst, and that's the one thing they didn't try.

Hm... My friend got his hand on one, and his brother sitting on it broke it.

I'm wondering if his had a specific problem, or what?

Why don't they try keeping it on a couch and have someone sitting on it

Thats a more probable scenario this product design should be tested for.

They did (well, it was a wooden chair, but hey):

"Our first test consisted of placing the iPod nano on a solid wood chair and sitting on it, as people are prone to do from time to time. As you can guess, this "test" yielded basically zero damage results—so little, in fact, that we didn't even take pictures."

I'm impressed. The idea of breaking it while sitting on it was definitely my biggest worry. Mad props to Apple for creating a fantastically durable product. I'm definitely encouraging my younger brother to pick this up now that I know it won't break on him so easily.

I can't wait till Samsung starts putting 16gb flash memory into these things. Then I'll pick one up. Till then, I'll just sit back and chill with my new Sleek.

Its not going to break when you keep it on a wooden chair. Coz its thickness is too small. So also why it doesn't break when its run over.

But I am impressed with the 'throwing' test results
