Gigabeat X30... slimmer, trimmer
comment: 25 | Tuesday, September 20 (2005) 09:02AM | Posted by Austin Vaughan
AV Watch Japan has the scoop on a new player from Toshiba, the Gigabeat X30. This one is very similiar to the current line of Gigabeats (F10/F20/F40/F60), with the same design and the same features, but they managed to shrink the X30 by 20% compared to the F20. It's lighter too - the X30 (30g) weighs in at 134g, while the F20 (20gb) was 160g.

Other than size, the only difference we can find is that the X30 will support WMA10 DRM for music subscription services (according to AV Watch - not listed among the specs), and the LCD spec was upped from 2.2 inches to 2.4 inches. Screen resolution remains at 320x240 pixels.

Price is expected to be 37k Yen ($ 330 USD) and it will be available in 3 colors - red, silver, and black. No mention yet of an X10/20/40 or X60.

More pics at AV Watch, see HERE.

Press release is HERE. (translated)

I can see a standard USB type B connection... is it USB host only (so, slower) or can I actually use the player with it?

Will it support MSC?
If so, looks nice... Just needs good atention with the player's internal software... =]

I have to say that from the pictures, it looks like they improved the Plus Touch by raising it above the player. The older Gigabeat has it recessed which really sucked having to push your fingertip into the groove if you as me. The cradle also looks better. I still wish it was a mass storage device. That is the only reason I would never buy one myself.

Until they fix the SAT encryption (and by fix, I mean remove), it's just going to be an amazing piece of hardware with lots of wasted potential. Kind of like the PSP before homebrew.

all i like about this POS is the screen, otherwise its just an ugly bulky heavy POS, it would probably make a very good paperweight for sebs memoirs

I just popped over to Engagdet and the it is "capable of playing MP3, WMA, and WAV files, and supports the USB Mass Storage class making file transfers completely painless." I f that is indeed true, well I have found a new mp3 player. I am assuming that it won't convert to SAT now. Fingers crossed...

Probably only USB mass storage for data files. So is this the perpendicular drive version?

Lone, no this is not a perpendicular tech drive.
Perpendicular drives are MK4007GAL (5mm) and MK8007GAH (8mm) (40 and 80 GB)

30gig verison, is oldschool, MK3006GAL.

Too bad it doesn't do video. Would be an nice extra feature with a screen like that.

it's ~87% the volume of the ipod MINI, and smaller in every dimension. that's pretty sweet but personally I want 8 and 10 gig flash players, not more 20-60gig.

It still looks fairly thick. Unfortunately they didn't add any features to it even though they had ample time to do so. Add an fm radio, video capabilties, UMS store, file formats and a longer batter life and this thing would be perfect. That beautiful screen feels like a waste without all of this.

What ever happened to the F41 & F61?

Oh well - this is nicer. Will there be newer, smaller cases for these?

When can I expect to get one, in the US?!?!?!?!?!?!?! I really wanna get this player. I waited for the first Gigabeats & the day they were released, Japan announced plans for a newer model (F41).

Now this is announced. When can I get it?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Given the button layout, this might benefit from Sony's "follow turn" thing they have on the HD5.

So... why does the yellow one not have color all the way to the edge, but the red and brown one do?

BTW, IMHO, these are kinda blah-looking, especially compared to the F-series. And what's this SAT encryption? Is it a proprietary file-type that your music gets convered to before being put on the player? (that's as near as I can guess from the comments here) If so, does it change sound quality?

Yellow one is the F series. SAT essentially makes it so that you can't remove tracks from the player and still be able to play them. It doesn't compress.

Design-wise, its still not really a "looker", but its size to feature ratio is pretty damn nice. Screen size is amazing as well. If they iron out the bugs.....

The lack of USB-Host is truly a shame for that beautiful screen, but if the specs are not mistaken, it is the size of the old ipod Mini! NW-HD5 with a color screen but with the battery life? Count me in!

Maybe the large screen eats the battery life. Hey - 16 hours is a long time to go between charges...

(PS - ssjmichael: Please suck me sideways...)

Maybe they should drop the whole "plus-touch" thing in favor of traditional buttons.
