Is the Nano flawed?
comment: 13 | Wednesday, September 21 (2005) 10:04PM | Posted by chicubs
This guy seems to think so.

Please note he does post a lengthy disclaimer. Let's follow his lead and avoid a flame war over this, ok?

He explains himself HERE. For those to lazy to read the whole thing:

"Take your iPod and press on the screen. Are you touching the LCD? No. Try it with the outside screen on your cell phone. My RAZR and Sidekick II have no problems. But the Nano. Touch it, you will see the slightest pressure on the plastic protection actually flexes and allows you to touch the screen. This is the first thing Apple should have noticed. They are selling the Nano over the Shuffle why? Because it has a screen. Why aren't they concerned about the protection of that screen? Is Apple forgetting they are a company of quality and bowing down to capitalism and trying to make as much money as they can? I certainly hope not."

Austin has a Nano, so we should know soon enough whether this issue has any validity. If it is indeed a true "flaw", it probably won't hurt apple too much. One little mistake won't kill them.

jesus that guy wrote a lot to explain himself. heres a better website:

"I think apple did not protect the screen on the nano adequetly. It is very easy to crack the screen with minimal force. I believe apple should make an effort to fix this problem. If you have cracked your screen, send me an email telling my how it cracked and a picture of the crack."

instead he writes a paragraphs of apple love and then multiple paragraphs of questions and explanations. i couldn't even read it. seems like a tool to me. but i agree that the screen shouldn't break as easy as he makes it seem.

Yea kind of long-winded and pre-emptively apologetic but there's probably something to it since Apple put so much emphasis on thinness. If there's a fix from Apple it'll probably be done as quietly as possible without admitting anything.

Some of the ultra small Canon digital cameras had (has?) a similar problem with cracking lcd's. In that case I think it was due to temperature extremes.

It stands to reason that the thinner something gets the less strong it is going to be. It's a trade off, and one that I would be happy to make. I'm sure it is not a major problem if you take good care of it.

What about laptop lcds ?

They'll have to put a 'glass' covering for the nano then ? What other solutions can you think of ?

Is this a problem anyway ? Can some non-partisan person confirm it. Nope not you Austin

I might be bothered to read more if the site was laid out better. Massive pages of Times New Roman do not exactly inspire me to read on.

If he's on to something though, good luck to him.

Buy it anyway

Seriously, there was a time when Apple was the Rebel Alliance... now it seems to have taken over as the new Dark Side. Is redemption possible or will I have to become a linux geek..?

What Apple company is he talking about? Apple charges a primium for all of their products.

Duh. I've been pointing it out for a while. Apple is no longer the "counter-culture company" they once were. I've been trying to point it out to their fanboys (not referring to anyone on this site) but they don't listen. Suing reporters for sources, banning companies from using their product names, suing companies that rip-off and improve on their own products...it's sad.

I certainly hope so. They have a legal responsibility to their shareholders to do exactly that.
