Olympus MR-100 - $ 100 (AR)
comment: 0 | Monday, September 26 (2005) 05:57PM | Posted by Austin Vaughan
Great deal on the Olympus MR-100 at RadioShack.com - right now it's going for $ 100 shipped, after $ 30 rebate. It's rather lean on features but we always liked the slick-looking design. Check out our review of the MR-100 from earlier this year, HERE, and there's 100 photos of it in our gallery, HERE.

Thanks, YpoCaramel

Man... I've always loved the styling of this one. Why can't it just, like, magically support OGG?

Man, that's a great price. Honestly that thing looks SO good I wish they would make a new one that looks just like it only in a 20GB or more capacity with better battery life... I would buy it in a heartbeat

Why can't it magically become UMS and support file tree browsing?

Great Deal... if this was done earlier or just a month after release, this m-robe could have given Ipod a descent challenge in marketability...

Nice price, and I do love the design of it... anyone know if there is a way to scale up the font size? I'm thinking about my parents, here...

iNeo, how is the sound driver issue where the sound didn't get nearly loud enough? Is it ok with the new patch?

I ordered mine yesterday instantly after reading about the offer here on dapreview.net. Lets see how long it takes to arrive here... I`ll post my thoughts about the player here...

Fender13: I read the sound goes way louder with the current firmware, so don`t worry about that.

Yea I stopped in my local RS and had to buy one. The guy said they're selling quick. He had 15 and was down to 3.

Actually, does anyone know if this thing goes into sleep when it powers down, or does it actually shut down completely each time?

No idea. Battery life is spec'd at 12 hours with the usual caveats (bitrate, volume, etc.) This player is really a mixed bag, with good looks and convenient size, and now low price, but with application-based music loading (sync based no less), no customizable graphic equalizer (it has a text-based bass-mid-treble boost/cut selection plus genre-specific presets (rock, jazz etc.)) No bookmarks, no OTF playlists, no radio, no encoding, a proprietary usb cable, unlike most players, when the backlight goes off the display is almost impossible to see... so basically there's a lot subtracting from what its looks provide.

For those who want to get in on this deal, you can get it down to $89 after rebate. There's a $10 off Radio Shack coupon that you can find in Entertainment books (05 or 06) in your city. I bought this last night at $89 AR, the rep at the store already had a coupon that a previous buyer gave him so no problem with the discount. Pretty good deal despite its shortcomings. I think the reason for problems posted is that this player is proprietary in almost everything and some guys just treat it as any other player.

Just a correction to my above post. The screen IS visible in bright sunlight without the backlight being on. It's dim but very readable. I guess it has a reflective baxk surface that doesn't depend on the backlight.
