Disney Mix Sticks
comment: 23 | Thursday, September 29 (2005) 11:08PM | Posted by Austin Vaughan
Disney has an upcoming line MP3 players in the works, which they are calling Mix Sticks. These are simple 128mb MP3/WMA players, obviously targeted at kids. The will have an an SD/MMC card slot that can take normal memory cards (up to 1gb) in addition to Mix Clip memory cards, which Disney will sell with prerecorded music from Walt Disney Records. The players will ship in mid October for about $ 49. Mix Clip cards will hold an album worth of music and cost about the same as a regular CD.

A little girl sees the Disney Mix Sticks and asks her mom...
"Mom, is that an Ipod?"

Those are actually some nice designs (for a kid player).

The silver one is okay....but they are overall horrible/hideous. Just trying to live off of their reputation, who would HONESTLY buy these when you could get something better? (excluding those who can't afford one)

no one has mentioned how much better it is than the shuffle since it has a screen. i wonder if it needs software to load music. it doesnt sound like it since the sticks they're selling are compatible with other things.

it looks abit like those small tetris/car race games that used to be more popular back in the 90s... and probably costs more or less like they did ... so that's pretty kewl to think about

I gotta say that for Disney to take a risk entering the world of MP3 players is something else, considering how badly previous risks have been for them (coughmoviescough)

Disney is capitalizing on their name. Take away the DIsney designs and you got a mediocre, less than everage player. But i really believe it's gonna sell..

I think Disney will sell the player but will have a hard time giving away Mix Sticks. Consumers are very resistant (wisely) to purchasing media on a proprietary format.

I would buy one of these for my daughter, but probably not at the $49 price point.

The silver one is very stylish, but did you notice in the "jukebox" shot, the display is all white? I'd guess that display doesn't allow you to navigate, except perhaps by track number.

consumers maybe, 5-10 year olds no, they will say mommy i want that for xmas, and hoo ha come xmas they get one....very few parents would be that technically minded to worry about a proprietary format.

Who knows, since Disney is planning to release ESPN-branded televisions, like they did with the Disney electronics line a couple of years back (TV and DVD players, AFAIK are made by Funai). In the near future (heck, I don't know when), I wonder if Disney would release the "ESPN"-branded DAP or a satellite radio.

I can hardly wait for my wife to bring me one when it shows up in the Lost & Found box at the library, after some kid drops theirs in the children's dept. Hopefully it'll be a "That's So Raven" one so I can file the side and rename it "That's So Mushroom." Hey, it's sleeker and has twice the capacity as my Rio 300... heh!
