Why not eh? Funny how a huge stack of clearance Mp3 players can just appear overnight at your local Walmart. Well, this one did.

It's called the Siren Mp3 player, though it's really just a Walmart branded player (like their iLo ones that have been out forever, with the innards made by GoVideo). In fact, the Siren player is virtually the same spec-wise: 512 MB capacity, FM radio+recording, Voice recording, SD/MMC slot, UMS capable, and 16 hour battery life on an AAA. Comes in Red, Blue, and Black models, and ships with a coupon for 10 free songs from Walmart's online music store.

I had a look while I was there, it seemed quite small (2.3"(W) x 1.8"(H) x 0.7"(D) are the actual dimension), and actually looked pretty slick, enough to catch my eye. At only $ 68.44, it's cheap enough to buy for the gym, or for a gift even.

Out of principal, I never buy anything from Sprawl-mart. Good thing that high-capacity flash players will soon be an inexpensive reality. Go Sandisk!

FYI - It doesn't save your place in your song (or audio book mp3) when you stop or power off the unit... So the one I picked up yesterday is going back to Walmart.

Got one the other day. It's pretty good in-expensive player. It's solid, has decent sound, has presets like normal, rock, etc. Dosn't have some of the advanced features like play lists and such but really not a big deal. For $68 get one you won't regret it.

48 Hours with a Siren 512 - It really was a great unit, but as the member rdow says above, it forgets where it left off when you turn it off. In fact, sometimes it forgets which track too, or the song order. I wanted to use it to catch up on a radio talk show with 45 minute mp3. So, loosing my place everytime it shuts off is a total disaster. If you can live with this, then this is a great deal. I took it back, got a Sony, which was even more of a disaster, but that's another story. I'm on a Creative Muvo which I should have bought in the first place. Parents, please do not disappoint your kids with a Siren 512 on Christmas. For a few more dollars you can get them quality and reliability.
