iPod nano: Tough to Kill
comment: 22 | Wednesday, October 05 (2005) 11:03AM | Posted by Austin Vaughan
Hey, it happens. You throw your jeans in wash, only to realize later that day that your precious DAP is missing... now, where did you put that? Ahhh, SHIT. Yup, you just drowned your poor little audio player. Sucker.

Some guy at macmerc.com managed to do just that with his shiney new iPod nano. But guess what? It survived. Of course, there was some water stuck inside (making the screen look kind of icky) but after a drying-out period it works just fine, apparently.

So, while not exactley waterproof, the nano proves once again that it can take a lickin' and keep on tickin'. We've also heard of a nano that survived being tossed out of a moving car, but that was on purpose.

Our respect to you, Seńior Nano.

I'm not surprised. Anything flash-based will work after being wet as long as the electronics are dry. Try this with any flash DAP, I guarantee you it'll be fine as long as the screen doesn't break. My PNY flash drive went through the washing machine, and after sitting out for a few hours to dry, it was good as new.

maybe, and i've of similiar cases, but unlike your PNY flash drive.. the nano has a color screen, click wheel, 4gb NAND, etc. lots of parts that could short out, permanently.

but the nano, aside for the screen that easily cracks is one tough cookie..

With a pod I could understand it shorting out, but normal flash DAP has no power coursing throught those parts.

I still think it's unremarkable.

I even plugged my PNY into USB while it was still wet (I didn't know it was still wet) and it didn't work at the time, but it worked afterwards. Nothing shorted out.

watergrave, have you kept up with that? it was only a small percentage, and they've offered to replace any defective units. that guys website didn't even get many replies with similar stories.

Well if apple say it is a small percentage I guess it must be then.

After all it's not like it's in their interests to lie about it.

well, then the response to that guys website can be a guage then. there were less than a handful of actual cracked screen pictures sent in. and that site was listed on many high traffic sites. do you have any better information? and if apple is fixing them, i would think they would make sure it wasn't something that was going to keep happening.

Well, most daps will survive out of it. Even MD survived from drowning -_-;;

Sharp DR80 one of the best MDs from sharp IMO, survived from flood, cuz my old apartment's water tank was broken due to severe cold -_-;; it was fine after I dried it. MD is more complicated little toy than MP3P is and it still managed to survive.

A nano only has the power keeping the clock running.

right, but to short something the current doesn't have to be flowing, the potential just has to be there. and there would be plenty of potential from the battery. it even looks like he started it while there was still water inside? that guy is a genius.

I wonder if there was fabric softener and bleach used, that'll surely mess up the components. But then again, check your pockets before throwing your pants in the wash!

I'm sure the same can be said about other players too...

Of course, but it's one or the other. I'm sure there are players in both categories, but if a particular player proves itself, whether you like that player or not, or whether you like the company behind that player, or whether you like the person behind the compnay behind that player, you have to respect that. I'm still not buying one though.

I think the macmerc dude was just lucky.

On the screen cracking... I'm sure I heard a news report stating that Apple were saying something like "We are aware that a small percentage of players may suffer from a screen defect, only affecting about 10% of units." 10%!!!! That's not a "small" percentage?!?! That's fecking hhhhuuuugggeeee!

Still think it's a marvel to behold though.
