Creative Labs has announced their newest home speaker system, the I-Trigue L3800, with NeoTitanium drivers and Lateral Firing Transducer. Basic audio specs are as follows:

  • Speaker power: 9 Watts RMS per channel (2 channels)
    30 Watts RMS subwoofer
  • Frequency response: 30Hz ~ 20kHz
  • Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR): 80dB
The big feature though with this unit is the wireless remote that will let you control playback from your Zen Vision, Zen Micro/Photo, or Zen Sleek/Photo. The remote is IR so you can use it from about 20 feet unobstructed.

Can someone explain to me why Creative is so enthralled with Titanium and now NeoTitanium drivers? Is there suppose to be an advantage? Their speakers always sound tinny and shrill next to the (also owned by Creative) Cambridge Soundworks lines (which in a CSW store are usually placed right next to each other). This may or may not be because of the "Titanium", but any theories?

Given that these speaks are only running at 9 watts and that they are (likely) crossed to not receive any lower frequencies, the benefits of titanium, or any metal for that matter, is minimal at best. One wouldn't expect the speaker cones to distort in any measurable way so I can see very little impact of going with titanium over aluminium. Hell, I wouldn't expect aluminium to be better than a coated paper cone at those low volumes.

The number that most concerns me is the SNR.. 80dB? That's not something to write home about.
