Sigmatel Chipset with Rio Audio goodness to come available Q4 2005
comment: 17 | Thursday, October 27 (2005) 10:41AM | Posted by Robert Sinke
Rio is dead, long live their technology! SigmaTel decided to put Rio's knowledge to good use after all, resulting in something that looks very sweet on paper.

Information overflow, so we'll just quote the main parts:

"Compared to current high capacity flash-based players on the market, the SigmaTel STMP3600 provides up to an 80% increase in battery life and smaller form factor design capabilities through the integration of battery recharge, power management, audio codec, and flash controller on a single chip solution. With support for all major audio codecs including MP3, Windows Media Audio, AAC, and OGG Vorbis, the STMP3600 offers industry-leading audio quality (based on tests using Rhode and Schwarz Audio Analyzer technology). In addition to world class audio, the STMP3600 will support MPEG4, H.264 and WMV9 video codecs at varying resolutions and bit rates.

Based on the ARM926EJ-S CPU with up to a 200 MHz operating frequency, the STMP3600 has integrated USB2.0 host and device, USB on-the-go, VFIR, and a Digital Radio Interface supporting SigmaTel's soon to be announced FM tuner solution.

SigmaTel will be delivering flash-based and hard disk-based reference designs developed with the STMP3600, including all firmware, PCB and components in the fourth quarter of 2005. SigmaTel's hard drive-based reference design developed on the STMP3600 will implement file management and user interface from SigmaTel's Cambridge, UK design team to ensure exceptional high capacity functionality."

Former Rio Audio UK crew guy peter (now: ST Cambridge) acknowledges all the goodness and awesomeness within this very message:

"I believe that the idea is that the manufacturers get the whole thing including parametric EQ and gapless support for the one price, giving them no real reason to remove them from their products, but there's nothing to stop them removing them if they really want to (for instance, if they're short of time when implementing their EQ UI, or if it's a deliberately simplified and dumbed-down product).
[...]
We already have the entire Karma feature set, plus USB mass-storage and more, working on the STMP3600

This is great news. It implies that we can expect DAPs with gapless playback, parametric EQ, Ogg Vorbis support and USB2.0 Mass Storage compliance as soon as Q4 of this year... which is pretty damn near. Wow... now for someone to actually build a casing around this chipset and we're all good to go!

Wow, so much goodness in one chip. Mouth waterig possibilites await.

Bet the reference player designs look awful, but then that's not the point, the potential is massive.

seems very nice, i hope they can really make this small in volume and big in battery life like they say

Great... watch them stick the chips in the next iPod.

You make that sound like a bad thing, if they did it would just about get rid of it's problems.

Excellent.

I wonder who's gonna do it--iAudio? iRiver? iSomeone We've Never Heard Of?

I don't care if apple get these chips, it would mean we would get awesome features, with the amazing amount of accessories that ipods always have, and easily availablility. The only accessories for the karma were 2 or 3 cases, and screen protectors, us fans couldn't even develop a line out cable! Of course though, imagine the options, if creative, iaudio and the rest of the DAP gang can deliver karma features to their players!

Ooh, and thanks for the credit rob

I'm loving this quote:- "...or if it's a deliberately simplified and dumbed-down product". I wonder who they could be possibly be implying

From memory, the iPod chipset (Portalplayer?) is more than capable of handling everything involved in the Sigmatel chip (possibly with "gapless" being an exception). They just choose not to add features to keep the device simple and to ensure that they still have "new" groundbreaking features to introduce in the gen 6, 7 & 8 players. ~rolls eyes~

Fingers crossed that this really does amount to "something" worthwhile.

"the STMP3600 has integrated USB2.0 host and device, USB on-the-go"

I thought those two things were the same. Am I wrong?

afaik, USB-OTG supports a solid list of specified devices, whereas the list for "Host" is unspecified (have to "find out for yourself" if the hook-up with the other device works), or vice versa. Or maybe I'm talking rubbish again.

Put that in the iAudio G3 and give it mucho-flasho, I’ll be the first in line to buy it.

someone should to alert Neuros about this development since they are working on several "audiophile" class media players... the karma's OS/GUI would put them years ahead of starting from scratch.

Austin: The main problem is I don't think there will be any form of OS/GUI supplied with the chip, I'm guessing it will all need to be written for each company that uses the chips. So, in other words, I don't think we can expect a TRUE karma replacement just quite yet. Unless of course someone buys the reference designs for the carbon c and all those products rio were working on, but I can't see that happening

Erm but it says "reference designs developed with the STMP3600, including all firmware, PCB and components"

Which suggests that there will be something for them to get a good starting point with, firmware pretty much covers os/gui doesn't it.

Any idea on who could be the possible customers for the STMP3600? Anyway we could convince iAudio to do so?
