Samsung P300
comment: 15 | Monday, November 07 (2005) 09:40AM | Posted by Austin Vaughan
We don't usually cover cell phones, but this one - the P300 - makes me wonder why Samsung can't manage build such an impressive digital audio player.

It's the size of a credit card, 0.35 inches thick, and has a 220x176 TFT color display. Inside they've stuffed a GSM/GPRS phone, 1.3MP camera, bluetooth, MP3 player, 90Mb RAM, etc. Obviously, Samsung has the engineering talent to pack a lot of goodies into such a small package, so why don't they have something similiar to the iPod Video by now..?

As it is, the top of the line MP3 player from Samsung is the YH-J70... which is OK, but leaves a lot to be desired. Hopefully they'll have something impressive to show us 3 months from now when we land at CES 2006.

I dont see how the j70 leaves "a lot" to be desired. It's not worse than the x5 or g5 ipod.

lol what austin means (I think) is that though the current generation of DAP's suffices, it can always be done better, like this cellphone/camera/music player hybrid. design looks awesome. Just lovely...

If it comes out within a year and doesn't cost too much, I think this might just be my next cellphone, seeing my service plan runs for just under a year to go.

So, the new Samsung P300 is a calculator with a color screen?

Here is the Google translation of the page. Note that it seems that there is no expansion memory card (like a mini-SD) mentioned (80MB seems to me to be too little for a music player):

New Samsung SGH P300 is technology concentrating. In single 87x54x8.9 millimeters it encloses in fact all the most advanced characteristic techniques.
The P300 is cellular tribanda a GSM/GPRS with camera from 1.3 megapixel in degree also to record filmati in format CIF (352x288).
The display it is TFT "wide" from 220x176 pixel. The memory available for images, video, music and sounds is of 80MB and 4MB for applicazoni JAVA. Not mancanco reader MP3/AAC, browser WAP 2,0, JAVA MIDP 2,0 with 2 games precarica you, memo vocal, agenda, calendar, activity, notes, alarm clock, calculator, converter, chronometer and count down. The memories for the contacts are 1000 to which it is possible to associate one photo and one suoneria, also in format MP3. The connectivity is assured thanks to the Bluetooth. The battery is to lithium.

I could see an accountant having a client in and being like "that's not just my calculator, it's also my cell phone!"

Yeah, I really want this phone. Been looking for a really small GSM like the VK2000 or Moto SLVR, but this is the first to have a megapixel camera w/video recording and MP3 playback. If 850MHz is one of the three available bands, I'm sold.

I'm not 100% certain, but I think that Samsung's handsets are regarded as overall better designed products than their digital audio players. Their mobile division also has more experience in dealing with customer's and retailer's needs, due to their extremely large product lines and popularity.

Yeah how long is that battery like? like 20 minutes? I can see the advertising campaign now... "Enough battery life for 1000 calls!!*"

*1000, 10 second calls

No 850MHz GSM (only 900/1800/1900MHz) - they can keep it. I don't understand how manufacturers can make an incredibly small handset w/video recording, but can't manage to release it as a quad-band for US release.
