Dell DJ v.3: Satellite Radio & MP3 Player
comment: 19 | Wednesday, November 16 (2005) 12:42PM | Posted by Austin Vaughan
Our pals at Gizmodo have the scoop on the next generation Dell DJ, as pictured here. We don't have many details to go on just yet - all we know is that new DJ will support XM Satellite audio, it can hold up to 15,000 tracks (which would equal a 60gb hard drive going by Apple iPod standards), and it will cost around $ 300. Unfortunately, the DJ does not have a built-in XM receiver. You have to capture radio recordings on your PC which you can then transfer to the DJ for playback. I'm guessing it will come packaged with a desktop receiver and a couple of free months worth of service but when that's over you'll have to pay the monthly fee ($ 13/mo) if you want to continue. Ehhh.

Aside from that, the design has been somewhat improved along with a more modern type of style. It does keep most of the same elements that we've seen in the last 2 generations, including a scroll-wheel for menu navigation and a dedicated set of playback-control buttons. The volume buttons appear to remain in the same awkward place, on the top edge, next to the headphone jack. About the screen... well, we can't tell anything from this picture but we're hoping that the DJ will finally get a color display like most of the new players from the last 6 months. Otherwise, like the Zen Sleek, it's going to look outdated right from the start...
FYI: Creative Technologies was the OEM for the last 2 versions of the Dell DJ and the DJ Diddy. Compare the GUI of a Zen and a DJ and you can see they are nearly identical.

Correct me if I'm wrong... a 60GB HD wouldn't it hold 15,000 tracks..?

yeah, by apples standards 15,000 songs = 60gb

Boy if someone could somehow meld the satellite radio and a hardrive dap into one box they could have quite a cool toy.
Something that integrates into your home stereo, computer, car stereo.

while it would make sense to assume 15000=60gb in apple standards, remember this is dell, purveyor of the 64kbps WMA. I'd guess 30gb, and probably no color screen. Well, maybe color, but definately 30gb, not 60.

Too bad they didn't hook up with Sirius instead which is my satellite radio of choice.

graybandit is right, if you look at Dell's site for the Current DJ, the 30GB model says it can hold up to 15,000 tracks, meaning the next gen will probably follow the 30gb = 15,000 tracks formula.

hmm... if it has a color screen, I just might get this over the new iPod. i have used the DJ before and love its size (almost mini-ish) and like the scroll wheel just as much as apple's click wheel. hope they dump the crappy creative firmware.

plus, black brushed aluminum is teh sh*t...

If only it was as sharp looking as the Sirius S50. That thing rules.

This looks way slicker than the Sirius IMO.

It looks nice... (Ive never been a fan of the, "log in water" scroll wheel though..) I just wish these things would pull down the shows on their own... realtime.. opposed to holding already recorded content...

That's actually the first thing I thought when I saw it supertoad. The body reminds me of the X30

That looks really slick. The scroll mechanism on the PocketDJ feels a bit cheap, but it's still better than a touchstrip or directional buttons. Hopefully they'll improve the way it feels. It's nice that they kept the dedicated volume buttons too, and the placement on top means you can actually get to them if you keep the DJ in your pocket.

XM audio--don't they broadcast in aac? That'd be cool if this could play aac+...

This thing looks quite nice. If dell could get it's act togther throw in some video (which it won't have) and Photos (which it may have) and replaceable battery, this thing could be real slick
