AV Watch takes a look at the Sony NW-A1000

In case you need some additional info/pics on the NW-A1000, feel free to browse the "Device Viking's" take on Sony's 6GB OLED-equiped DAP.

It might very well be that your local BB/CC/BCC (:P)/MediaMarkt has one of these things up on display - mine had, and well... eh. It's a DAP, I guess. As often the case with publically-accessible stuff, the NW-A1000 had fingerprints all over it - in fact, there was a whole layer of humanoidish, grease-like byproducts smeared across the otherwise colorful front plate.

In all other aspects, the NW-A1000 did what it had to do - it's nice to see "bigger" OLEDs appear on "more mature" brands, sound quality was ok (as far as I could tell, being surrounded by 3 billion rabid Sinterklaas-shoppers and all) but ehm... the DAP-nut in me didn't even bother getting up. We're gonna need a bigger alarm clock, Sony. One that comes without a rootkit of any kind, s'il vous plait.

Had a play on one too looks ok - purple one is a bit nasty tho

Didn't like the shipped headphones but that par for the course

it's a bit of a fingerprint magnet but the marks come off unlike a G5 iPod which looked like it was rubbed down with sandpaper

Yep. Played with one myself today. Super smudgy indeed. It felt very nice in the hand, since the curved shape sites nicely. Navigation was okay. Features seemed okay. I didn't play for that long though, as they also had the new Philips, which distracted me for much longer.

My main gripe though... is the display. Fair enough, they've used OLED on a comparatively large display, but it looks *really* pixelated. I can't understand why Sony haven't gone colour. I know it'll help with battery life, but it makes the first impression a bit "average".

well, Sony is not able to produce decent lcd or pdp panels used in tvs.

They just buy those displays from other companies and they established a lcd company with Samsung called S-lcd, because they are far behind in the lcd techonology compared to market leaders such as Samsung.

It was a Sony's mistake that has caused the fall of Sony Kingdom. They were just focusing on their origianl tv techonology while other companies were investing in lcd and pdp techonology. Sony always want to invent new things and create all the standards in consumer electronics.

That's the same reason why sony walkman has been failing miserably against Apple.
