SIR & EDGE players from Siren
comment: 4 | Sunday, November 27 (2005) 09:43AM | Posted by Lone
Remember the cheapo Siren player available at Walmart? There's more where that came from.

Apparently they have an official site now, sirenplayer.com, and from there you can find info on their latest flash creations, the SIR (pictured left) and EDGE (pictured right).

These players are sorta uninteresting in that they have virtually the same specs as the original Siren DAP, as well as the iLo models: Mass storage device, FM radio, Voice recording, SD/MMC expansion slot, 16 hour battery life on an AAA, etc. What makes them semi-interesing is the listed capacities: 512 MB, 1 GB, 2 GB, and 4 GB. Makes them the third to market with a 4 GB flash player behind Apple and Sandisk, if they can get the product out in time (who knows what exactly "coming soon" means). Of course the older players were pretty buggy firmware-wise, so we'll see if that actually gets worked on.

It's interesting that these players have two valuable features that most mainstream manufacturers seem to run from like the plague: UMS and sd/mmc slots. If they can get some quality control in their hardware and software they could probably get significant market share based on those features.

Aside from the look, what exactly is the difference between the SIR and the EDGE?
They share everything, from the silly names to the battery life, and the SD expansion slots (which is stated to support SD cards up only to a measly 1GB). Either way, them ILO players are really cheap, so if the price for these are low, my Sandisk Sansa 1GB is probably ready for an upgrade.

......Even though my Sansa's pretty much indestructible, and the ILOs have wayy to many problems for me to even consider buying one.

First the players... then the site? hmm it would be nice to be able to pick up a really cheap 4 gig flash player... the UI kinda looks like something from Rio...

For some reason I don't have much faith in seeing a 4GB version of these too soon. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that Sandisk can't even get one out the door yet.

Me neither, I'd bet you'll see the 512 MB and 1 GB models in Walmart, but the 2 and 4 giggers online only or something.

And Allen, the UI is by GoVideo, and it does look similiar to Rio's UI.

The Edge looks like someone forced a rebranded Rio Carbon into some sort of huge metal thing. It's so fugly. The Siren looks better.

At least its not an ugly logo though. It could've been much uglier (see: MPIO).

and aniyem, on the sir site it says "includes expansion slot for up to an additional 4gb"

External Memory:Using a higher capacity SD card with your digital audio player increase s power consumption due to the need to manage more audio files. Although your digital audio player is compatible with up to 1GB of external memory, you may see a decrease in battery performance when using these cards.

/.....That was from the FAQ page. I was under the assumption that the info applied to all players.

No wonder the thing looks Rioish, the team of Siren are all from Rio. Guess they lost their jobs when Rio went out of buisness then stared to make crap players.

Mpio's logo looks better than this companyy's ssjmichael. And atleast mpio does not make it as large as they can.

My fault it probably wasn't MPIO i'm referring too. It was a color screen flash player who had a huge logo on the front that I believe started with an M. The logo was bigger than the actual screen. I could've sworn it was mpio but I can't find it.

I found the player it's the MPeye HTS-200. I think you can see by the name why I confused it with MPIO and also why I say I referenced it. It's freaking huge.

I like the Siren 4GB one. The real questions are:

1. Was it ever available for sale?

2. HOW MUCH $$$ ???

The edge looks like someone brought it too close to a black hole. Or the guy who designed it was legally blind. Or draws cartoons for a living. Or is subconciously asking for help. Or quit the same day.

Here's what their team mailed me back with when i asked about prices and release dates:

Thank you for contacting Siren Audio. At this time, there is not an official release date for the Siren Edge players. Please continue checking the Siren website (www.sirenplayer.com) for more information on our exciting new players.

So I think we can safely assume that the 4gigger won't come out anytime soon, given that they can't even mention an estimate for the 512/1gig players, and Sandisk's still stalling on their own 4gig Sansa.
