Creative Gets Video Partners
comment: 27 | Sunday, December 11 (2005) 05:29PM | Posted by chicubs
We all know about the iPod's video store and partnership with ABC, but what was Creative's answer to this going to be? Were they going to bank on everyone having their video collection already on their computer?

The questions were partly answered by several announcements:

- The Zen Vision: M will support BBC's IMP service. It allows users (Uk people that it) to download past radio and television programs from the last week. The files will be in WMV DRM.

- Creative is also parterning with "7 Digital"
7 Digital, the UK’s biggest legal music and video download provider, has demonstrated the portability of its digital video download service at the launch of Creative’s latest portable media player, the Zen Vision:M today.

The new 7 Digital download service at [Linky] features DVD quality videos to download from a broad spectrum of media companies such as EMI, Sony BMG, Channel 5, Warner, Universal, V2, MTV and many others.

Videos start at 99p which about 1.73 dollars (?).

Cool. I wonder how long it will be before places like Napster and Yahoo! Unlimited start video sectors in their download service. If creative really makes plans to set up a download service in N. America and gets channels like Fox and MTV then this thing will certainly sell.

I'd rather that Creative not go for direct partnerships w/ american entertainment channels as they will know that Creative is looking to counter Apple, whatever it takes, and will gouge Creative for as high a price as they can get, because they also know that Creative will sell a tenth of the players that Apple will (if they're even that lucky), so the profit outlook for them will play a factor too. By focusing on a considerably smaller test market (the UK), Creative is wisely testing the waters, before coming up with a concrete plan, if any to bring similar services to the US.

I wish the BBC would open up their video vaults to non-UK citizens for a pay-per-download system, though. This would give them access to a much bigger market, and would encourage viewership of BBC America shows, especially stuff like the Office, Singles, and Peep Show. And that, of course, would enable anyone to have those shows available on the Zen Vision M. Which of course, would be great news for Creative.

I'm getting more and more excited about this player. I'm glad they didn't make it as thin as the Ipod. I think it was intentional on their part; this way, they've hopefully been able to put in better video capabilities, as well as retain Creative's trademark kick-ass sound quality.

Let's just hope that the headphone jack problem has been PERMANENTLY fixed this time. Creative seems to be spending serious money promoting this thing. There had better not be a design fuckup to ruin it for us.

Wonder why Creative's so keen on targetting the UK market? Granted, the BBC thing is more a side-effect of the Vision:M's support for DRMed WMV files; anyone can play those files on any platform, so long as it supports the file type. But the 7 Digital thing...odd. Also remember that the flash site set up before the Vision:M's launch, the one which ripped off Apple's theatre invitations, was made and hosted by the UK division of Creative.

Has Creative given up on the North American market?

looks like it. I think most of the people who buy this player for video purposes probably aren't too interested in buying video for it anyways Caugh bittorrent Caugh, still it would be a nice bonus to have a couple online stores I'm not trying to generalize who i thnk the majority of the buyer will be. I'm just taking a wild stab...

It is Creative's job to provide legal ways for people to obtain videos though and this is their objective. I can't say whether this is them waging a war or just justifying their video player. They're doing a very good job so far and that's evident by the amount of news we are hearing about the player.

All that's left is for them to stick Wi-Fi and a web browser effergy to get videos/music in the player.

So movies from movielink, etc (which use WMV DRM) are playable on this player ? Thats getting to be interesting The movies on movielink are timed though, they can't be owned - I think.

Seven days after the programme transmission date the programme file expires (using Digital Rights Management - DRM - software) and users will no longer be able to watch it. DRM also prevents users emailing the files to other computer users or sharing it via disc.

So, you have to watch your BBC's downloaded programme within 7 days.

When you purchase a track, our system will issue you a personal license enabling you to play the track on up to 3 computers as well as burn the track to CD and transfer to a compatible portable music player.

Ah, 3 coms and burnable for 7 Digital.

You know what? I think Apple is getting pwned in their portable video scheme. They didn't realise that other companies have a hell of a lot more experience than they do.

branjo what other layout should the photo be... diamond like? swivelling? hologram? just because apple came up with the idea doesn't mean they own it, and plus its just like any one else would think.

props to creative for stepping up the competition.

Apple has to start supporting divx (think what would have happened to the ipod if it never played mp3) and other formats

&

really 'lock-in' content from the major studios and make it not available at other stores.

Now is a good time for netflix to start its downloadable video rental

^the ipod will NEVER support divx.

if movie giants like MGM, Alliance, Paramount, etc noticed that apple would allow the iPod to use a pirate friendly format, it wouldnt get near to locking in on the monopoly in video like it does with MP3s. The movie industry favors the ipod for two reasons: its overblown popularity, and its LEGAL content.

Thats true, its tricky for Apple to start supporting divx after this. But then Apple marketing has never ceased to amaze me.

and Thanks zip22 ...
