Zen Vision M Reviewed
comment: 36 | Sunday, December 18 (2005) 05:10AM | Posted by Austin Vaughan
AV Watch has some nice pics of Creative's new Zen Vision M. A review too, if you read Japanese.

LINKI just checked Creative's webshop (US) and the ZVM isn't in stock yet. Will it ship in time for Christmas or what? It seems doubtful at this point, but there's still a few days left...

Looks good. It doesn't look that thick in that guys hands either, although maybe at a different angle it'd be a different story. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing this in person.

Also, Amazon.com has a pre-order up for this player, but no release date.

Someone in the forum contacted Creative, and they received a reply saying they'll have it in February.

Looks like Creative made better use of the big screen than Apple.

So what do you think they're going to end up naming the microdrive version of this. I've got a feeling that "Zen Vision Micro" and "Zen Vision M" might get a bit confusing.

"Looks like Creative made better use of the big screen than Apple."
It definately has more functionality, but in terms of space use it's pretty much the same with a volume bar stuck on the side. It's not hard to nudge your volume a bit on the ipod to see what it is. I'm not sure if that water background makes the screen harder to see, but I'm sure you'll be able to edit it out with a tool.

The perfect mp3 player would have option to display the bitrate, the codec would probably have an editable interface. Alas....

YpoCaramel- Actually Zen players have always displayed bit rate, codec ect.... you just open up the submenu on the selected song and select "view detail", this is nice because it take all the clutter of the "now playing" screen giving it a nice clean look. Too bad the ipod doesn't do this zip, it "lacks" that option.

Well, they've already used micro, and nano would probably prompt legal action from Apple. Milli wouldn't make sense, as it woud be smaller than the M. I guess pico could work, but nothing smaller than that seems to have any "zing" to it.

heh, apple suing for creative using the name "nano"? That'd be an interesting case; too bad apple's too smart to sue the company from which apple itself "stole" the name.

haha, I can read japanese!

i was merely attempting to point out how weird it was that the same point had been brought up multiple times. not even expanded on, just restated.

did your post have a point? it had already been mentioned twice and in a more appropriate manner. how about the post 30 minutes after yours that said the same thing? oh thats right, despite it being just as inane, it was passable since it agreed with you... i'm glad you're not a mod, the site would be significantly worse.

"umm, i just thought i should post about this too."

That doesn't exactly see like you were agreeing with me or with anything. I was the first to quote that person, and only one other person did, but I was actually pointing out something unlike what you were doing with your above statement.

About me being a mod, I know if I was one I'd do an excellent job. I've been mods at other sites and I've acted very professional in such situations. The same would be true for this site. I'm sure you'd just love if that Vision:M thread went on to 100 pages of argument, but if I was mod I'd lock it. If that's what you call making something "significantly worse" then you need a better dictionary.

I'd appreciate it if that was all that was said about this, and if you could please go back to the topic at hand. If you happen to have anything further to reply to me, please do it via PM's

mm, so there's been a lot of talk about this player ripping the iPod off, but the reviewer mentions that he doesn't think so. He does mention that the white color-scheme one is reminiscent of the iPod, but otherwise, the player feels and looks different.

yes - I know the X5 does. Life is always a set of trade-offs, and I traded that for a ID3 tag database amongst over things... I don't mean the X5 is perfect - it's good in that respect, but the conceptual "perfect mp3 player" would have everything and thing we wouldn't even know we'd want.

who the hell cares enough about codec and bitrate info to want it on the main screen or any where on the player itself? You really can't wait until you get home to check what bitrate your music is in? My idea of the perfect player would get rid of all the useless info such as this and make the player simple, elegant, and -above all else- functional. I think some of you people just get off on the idea of having certain features on a player without thinking about whether you'd actually need/use it.

"perfect player" my ass.

The thing about info is, it's there if you need it. Maybe you're listening to a song and say, "hey, this song doesn't sound as good as the last one, what's the bit rate?" And it right there. If you don't need it, you can just overlook it, which may be the case 90% of the time. The point is, it's your option. On a player that doesn't provide that, you don't have that option. I'd rather have lots of features and options and choose the subset that I want at the time rather than have someone else decide for me what I need and don't need.

I'd rather have more options available than less, but of course it has to be easy to use. There is nothing worse than a player that is featured pack, but difficult to use and find fuctions. I think Creative Labs may have succeeded in this area. I can't wait to try it out at a bricks and mortar store!
