iPod bottom-part rip-off actually exists, has dumb name (DCT-SDMP3/U)
comment: 2 | Monday, December 19 (2005) 05:30AM | Posted by Robert Sinke
Ha. Whoever expected this one to make it to anywhere? We've discussed the Elelux WMT-60 a while ago and now it's back, pretending to be "big in Japan" or something. Some really-weirdly-named company - Digital Cowboy - thought that it was time to introduce the bottom part of the iPod v4 to their fellow countrymen again. It's actually a dedicated DAP, this DCT-SDMP3/U thing (what a ghastly name, as usual). You'll have to insert an SD card to make it work (capacities ranging from 32MB up to 512Mb supported) and the "click wheel" doesn't support scrolling of any kind (it's just a funny face plate for regular buttons, really). Mind you, it's only USB1.1 compatible to make things worse. Measuring 56×13.4×59mm, weighing 26 grams and costing only 25 bucks, we suspect that this thing could prove succesful in Japan rather than anywhere else. Those guys and gals over there are obsessed with their little poddies, so our guess is that some of them would settle with half of it as well - even if it doesn't come with a screen or "shuffle" written in its user manual. $25? What the heck, i'd buy one - just so I could tell people I sawed my ipod in half cuz it was too big.
BTW, I remember seeing something like this in the 'design your own flash ipod' contest back before the Shuffle came out.
Seriously, I like this thing. It's the cheapest no-memory player out there and it's not bad to look at. It'll probably never come to the States though because at $25 apeice the company probably can't afford many lawyers.
