NHJ VHD-5100 (5gb) - 95 dolla!
comment: 3 | Friday, December 30 (2005) 02:37AM | Posted by Austin Vaughan

NHJ VHD-5100
Geeks.com can has a nice deal on this 5gb audio player from NHJ. For 95 bucks you get a MP3/WMA player with a 1.6-inch TFT color screen, JPEG viewer, FM radio, line-in audio recorder, and voice recorder. It's mass storage compliant, so it can also function as a portable disk drive. The internal battery only lasts 9 hours or so which is kind of weak, but hey, it's cheap. And it's not white, so +10 points there.

UPDATE: One of our readers reports this dap has USB-OTG (USB host) as well, so you could download pics from your camera or copy files off a USB-key drive, etc. Nice little bonus. - Thanks, Ricardo Dawkins
Thanks, ssjmichael

Also this product was mentioned by Rob back in April and he stated a battery life of 12 hours, but their website does say 9, so I guess its the latter.

http://tekgems.com/Products/et-20652-mp3-vhd-5100-j.htm
-> austin found this with googling ... shows all specs etc. of device in ye good old english ... with nice pics so it's ok

http://mp3players.alege.net/NHJ-Limited-VHD5100-5-GB-MP3-Player.html
-> only specs

now someone/anyone who bought this:

screen quality ? -> viewable indoor/outdoor etc. ... / picture detail
batterylife ? -> all other websites rate 12h... give me some nice realistic nr with only playing music
radio reception ? Is it decent ?
Load times ???
Firmware support ? / playslist etc. supported ? music + playing photo's ?

I'm very very eager, but I'm going to ski very soon so I'm not going to blow money on a crappy player that I'll only have in month or so...

How did you connect Ricardo to being owner of Tekgems just because he posted a link from them? From what i've read he's located in Panama, and this is one of his posts:

Hello, everyone.

NHJ VHD-5100
[Linky]

[Linky]

I was expecting to get this DAP this weekend but [Linky] is "out of stock". the features of this DAP are excellent with a killer price.

* Black Color
* 4GB+
* UST On-The-GO
* Color screen
* FM tuner (high for me)
* Nice accesories

Now, I'm looking for a replacement (if can't find this DAP again) and the only things I see on [Linky] or [Linky] with my price range max 150 USD. are:
Creative Muvo2 (dont like the UI and screen size)
Creative Zen Micro (no color screen, a bit expensive)
iriver H10 (not expensive if used or slightly broken)
Samsung YH-820MC (I wanted this one but w/o FM tuning is a no for me.)
Virgin 5GB DAP (manufacturer gone so no support)
Olympus I:robe 5GB DAP (soon to be not supported and w/o FM)

What should I do ? I need advice, should I wait for the VHD-5100 or pick the Samsung or the Micro....I want to pick the Virgin...but no support for it is bad.

That doesn't exactly sound like the owner of Tekgems, so lets not jump to conclusions.

^^^ yeah, I'm from Panama. That page dasmen was linking on ebay was my first trial to get this player on Tekgems..but after I ordered and paid for it they cancelled the order. The player was OOS early in December.

OK, just put in my order
That was the fastest time I've ever whipped out my credit card and put in an order. I totally missed my window of opportunity with the $100 m:robe 100 at rshack a few months back, so I definitely did not want to miss this, since it doesn't seem to have the problems (fingers crossed) that the m:robe was plagued with.

It sucks that geeks.com won't deliver to PO addresses. I'm a college student, and that's the only way we can receive stuff, since we don't have a physical address we can put down. I put down my mailing center's address, so hopefully, that'll work out.

Ok, i've been looking around for reviews for this product everywhere, and have been unable to find anything in English. It's predecessor (i'm guessing) is still on sale at Amazon.com, and good decent reviews, though.

One question I have is: (i've already ordered it, but whatever)
Does it display album art? Photo capability is useless to me without album art display capability:)
Also, when you guys say MSC compliant, does that work like Archos players, where no external software needs to be installed, and you can just drag and drop files from folders in My Computer?

and finally, if anyone was interested, I've found a site with some decent (not great, but decent) pictures of it. They're also selling it for $269 rofl.

Unfortunately I don't think it'll do album art, but I'm not 100% on that. It's a UMS player which will work without any software just like archos players.

I bought one simply because of the USB-OTG. Rather than getting a measly 1gb SD card for my digital camera that costs $120, I'll just use the 32mb card that comes with the camera and use the NHJ VHD-5100 as a way to store my images. Even if that doesn't work out, I still have a reasonably priced MP3 player that has an FM tuner and voice recording. Now if only we can get RockBox on it....

i finally got mine from fedex today and i'm pleased with it. the only thing that i don't like about it is that it doesn't start the music from where you left off at when you power it back on. i've only dealt with the creative zen series/dell dj's and ipods and that feature is available on those.

I've had mine about 2 weeks now, and its superb as a 5gb usb2 drive, but beyond that, you get what you pay for.

it takes about 10 secs to boot. it seems to also have a nasty tendency to shut itself down at random every now and then. the buttons light up when the screen backlight is on, which is nice.

I have canon a95 and a620 digital cameras, and it wont communicate with either as a usb host. ive heard that canon cameras can be very funny about usb hosts however.

music wise, you can select tracks via file navigation, or by id3 - but the id3 indexes are generated by an external piece of software that you have to run when the unit is connected to a pc.

navigating by id3 sucks on this unit. when you select 'album', it lists the tracks in alphabetical order, so you dont know which is the first track, unless you know the album well.

sound quality isnt bad, but even on a flat eq setting, the bass is pumped up to overcome the faults of the supplied earbuds. as soon as i plug in a pair of portapros, im jumping for the eq to turn the bass down. which is a pain, because you cant set the eq while playing a track. you have to quit, go out into the main menu, and go into config to edit the user eq settings. there are gaps between tracks on playback.

the recording functions are a joke. the AGC is brutal and clumsy, and cant be turned off. it has a line in, and an internal mic. no support for an external mic (unless it has a line level preamp built in). But the worst bit is that any recordings you make, line or mic, will suffer from a continuous high pitched tone and other hard drive noise, rendering them pretty useless. some manufacturers include all these features to make the sales pitch look good, but poor hardware/firmware makes them useless.

the radio works, but reception isnt wonderful. fine for strong stations though.

the photo mode was always going to be pretty lame on a screen with these specs. its ok for quick previews of files, so you can see what is on there, but not much use for showing people things.

all in all, for 95 bucks, its a great bit of portable storage, with the ability to browse your files, and play a bit of music. if you are expecting anything beyond this you will be very disappointed.

I should also add that simultaneous doing anything is not possible. no music while photo browsing, etc. its one thing at a time.

battery life seems ok so far, but i havent been timing it.

as far as I can tell, it doesnt support playlists.

the firmware seems fairly basic and navigation is clunky.

Hello eveyone,
Anybody have know if the battery could be replaced when it is 'dead'?

Also what is the lifespan of the battery? Or how long will it take before the battery stops working?

Thanks in advance

anomalous:

I was actually writing a review when I saw that you had already posted one. I thought your was well written, so I decided not to do a review. One thing I might add about the USB host: I have a Canon a610 and the USB host does not work if you plug the camera directly to the mp3 player. Since the only reason I bought this player was to use it as a photo dump, I was quite dissapointed that this feature did not work. However, I found that the USB host feature did work with flash drives and my RockBox'ed iRiver H120, which I thought surprising.

So I decided to buy a USB memory card reader and see if that worked. To my delight, it turns out that it did. I bought the SanDisk MobileMate SD card reader from Best Buy for only $20, which brings my total cost to $128. I just snap in my SD card into the MobileMate, connect the MobileMate and 5100, turn on the USB host feature in the 5100, and start transferring files from my SD card to the 5100. The transfers between the 5100 and the MobileMate were nice and speedy. I also liked the fact that every time you connected the MobileMate and 5100, the 5100 would create new folders, so there is no risk of overwriting any files. I wouldn't recommend viewing the photos on the player as it takes quite a long time for them to finish loading.

In conclusion, buy this player for its function as a file dump. The fact that it is able to play music, tune into radio stations, and record conversations should be considered as added bonuses.
