iRiver G10?
comment: 34 | Monday, January 02 (2006) 10:42PM | Posted by Lone
I'm sure Austin and Rob will have more details when they visit iRiver at CES, but for now here's a little hook. It's their new portable media player/game console/music player, and if the translation is accurate, it will be called the G10.

As you can see from the photo, this device features a sliding panel that holds the buttons, which are setup in typical game controller fashion. The overall style is very similar to that of the U10, including the piano white and black exterior, and even the shape of the tactile buttons (mirroring those from the U10's dock remote). The G10 has a 4" WVGA screen capable of displaying 260k colors, runs WindowsCE, and supposedly will come in 4 and 8 GB capacities (flash or microdrive?). Nothing on the page mentions whether iRiver will be offering games and software for purchase or download, or if emulation will work (not likely), but I'm sure will find out more later this week.

Very cool, is this the sucessor to the gameboy micro :p ? I really hope there are dedicated buttons for audio controls mounted on the side of the player. If not it would be a pain having to flip up the screen every time I wanted to adjust the volume or change a track. Cool concept, poor execution from what I can tell.

Don't get to excited remember what happen with the U10. It got hype up so much before it got released then the price and capacity of the player killed it before it was even out. Knowing iriver this thing will cost an arm and leg to get. Wish they would do something about there pricing strategy.

I love the fresh design, like the U10, but like Point said, this could be $ 300+ or something ridiculous like that. I'm guessing a microdrive is in there to keep costs down.

this thing plays online games (shown above is kOrean online game called "CartRider") using the technology called WiBro offered by KT, the largest Korean network provider.

This is supposedly a WiBro gadget, meaning it'll run off Korea Telecom's WiBro network, which I think is an implementation of WiMax. Anyways, no good for US users unless we start adopting such a network soon.

Sweet! Can you believe that someone made a product cooler (design wise) than the U10! Well... it is by the same company.

INeo has a good point. It could be lit with LED when it is closed, but I highly doubt that.

This thing probably doesn't have a great battery life. If it's under 10 hours and over 350 I know I will never buy it. It best have at least 10 gigs of space to.

As far as the design goes I love it. Looks very fragile though.

I read on misticriver (i think) that they are going to release it in August. So, this is another of irivers products you have to wait for. By the time it is out it will probably be half way obsolete again.

Yep this thing looks fabulous, but I'm slightly disappointed that iRiver seems to be branching out into gaming and other convergence devices (DicPle, for example) rather than concentrating on making great DAPs. Audiophiles loved and still love the H100 series, but how long ago was that? I'm still waiting for their next real HD player (H10 20GB was dull as hell) - I want iRiver to just knock the world out with the next H100, but that seems to be an increasingly forlorn hope.

I'm guessing this was the rumoured 8Gb U10 from a while ago then?

What I can make up from the misticriver-forums:

- It's a portable WiBro on-line gaming console. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WiBro)
- Screen: 4" 260k color WVGA(800x480) TFT-LCD
- 3D Acceleration chip
- OS: Windows CE 5.0
- Capacity: 4~8GB

"I dont know if it will go under the iriver name though, news reports have said it was by reigncom, and the iriver logo in one of the iamges is clearly photoshopped"

- No info on iRiver official website yet
- Probably Korea-only (--> wibro)

Reigncom, the mother company of iriver, announced the G10, their newest portable WiBro online gaming device. It will be showcased at CES 2006 in Las Vegas from Janaury 5-8.

The G10 will utilize KT's portable internet (WiBro) network for online services which will enable users to enjoy various services wherever and whenever they want including games. The G10 has a slide mechanism to reveal 10 buttons. With a 4 inch WVGA (800x480 pixels) 260K color LCD screen and a 3D chip, the G10 can display fantastic colors and high details. The OS to be used is WinCE 5.0 and the capacity will be in the 4~8 GB range.

A company employee said that the specifications and exterior design may undergo slight changes after the G10 is revealed to the public and feedback is obtained. Reigncom has been actively pursuing partnership with various game publishers to acquire gaming contents.

Looks like this will be a gaming device with PMP features. The press release that Dibilio posted doesn't even mention the DAP/PMP features. The capacity is really poor if you plan to keep a lot of movies and videos on it. It would be nice if this featured the U10 style rocker-screen style controls when closed. The U10 interface is great for DAP features but is really poor for gaming (the Space Invaders game requires the player to constantly move their hand from the side to the bottom to go between move and fire).

Free flashgames and lots of them downloadable from all over the internet? Yes, thanks. If one suppose to pay for some few semi-quality release-titles, like Nokias now-dead-and buried alternatives. Forget it.

Well, it should probably be called DMPreview now really. Digitla Media Player. Nearly every DAP out there can do more than play music nowadays.

The G10 probably still does play mp3 though and it is by one of the bigger Korean DAP companies. So technichally we should cover it

I honestly like this thing. Is this going to run windows CE5.0 or is it going to be Windows Mobile 5? Because there is a difference. With CE you can essentially run Windows apps on it with the right stuff off course. And WM5 has in many ways more software and games since it is less business oriented.

if this thing can run .smc ROMs (SNES roms) and maybe some N64 ones, I'm sold. Oh, and flash games. Then I'm sold. Screw the PSP.

This looks very nice, where can I get a closer look at the game it's running? Looks like a clone of Mario Kart DS (which I am so addicted to at the moment!)

The best thing about this is you should be able to run emulators on it, since it's running Windows CE

I know this would make it look not as cool, but maybe making the screen slide out so it's protected, and so you always have access to the controls seems like a better concept.
