CES 2006: little heads-up on Samsung

Alright, to get a bit more specific, let's get into some (more or less) interesting brands and their respective products. One of the more reputable manufacturers out there was Samsung, which managed to come up with a few new DAPs and PMPs. Yes, they do this to us all the time - and we'll keep reporting on the whole thing just as well.

You've probably familiarized yourselves with the Z5 already, and the unit does have a rather striking touch to it (design-wise) but our actual hands-on experience wasn't too promising: sure, the Z5 weighs next to nothing yet it also feels kind of cheap and plastic-like. It's slim and does come with a color screen - but on the other hand, we're already used to that (nano anyone?) plus the Z5's screen wasn't impressive at all. Samsung came up with way more vibrant, less-pixelated color screens in the past (T8/D1, YH-Jx0) already.

Next to the Z5 there was the YP-U2. Indeed, just as we were getting used to the YP-U1 being a solid performer in the simple-performance DAP segment... Samsung decided to come up with a successor. Boy, that's fast! The YP-U2 (sounds familiar?) has a basic memory capacity of 512MB or 1GB flash (2GB said to be "coming up") at MSRPs of 99 USD and 129 USD respectively.

It comes with a nice, inverted yet simple monochrome LCD screen, a USB-pen to easily transfer files and tracks, FM tuner, voice recorder, Ogg Vorbis support (MP3/WMA too), a 20 hour battery life and two funky blue LEDs at the top. Nothing too exciting but it's smaller than the YP-U1 and, well, new.

In a rather far-off corner of Samsung's booth, we also ran into this weird "Z5-like" player that obviously supported TV-out (pictured below, click link). Next to that, the YM-P1, YP-T7J and a DMB player called "DMB-T450" were also on display. We might discuss those later on.
