CES 2006: Cowon iAudio
comment: 4 | Friday, January 06 (2006) 11:56AM | Posted by Austin Vaughan
At the top of our list yesterday was Cowon iAudio since we had heard rumors of a new MicroDrive based player, the iAudio 6. Sure enough, they had it on display and we were able play with it for a few minutes. It's amazingly small for a hard drive based player, hardly bigger than the iAudio U3 (a flash memory based player). In fact, I believe it's the smallest player of this type we've ever seen, due in part to the new 0.85-inch hard drive that it uses instead of the more common 1-inch type MicroDrive.

Features:
• 0.85-inch hard drive, 4gb
• 1.3-inch OLED display (260k colors)
• Plays MPEG-4 video
• Plays MP3, WMA, OGG, FLAC, & WAV audio
• Supports WMA10 DRM (Janus)
• JPEG pictures viewing
• Text file viewing
• FM radio, recording
• Voice recording
• Line-input audio recording
• USB Host (USB OTG)
• Touch-sensitive and mechanical controls

Build quality is very solid, typical of iAudio players. The screen is bright and easy to read, with a resolution of about 160x120 (a guesstimate). Exact details were not available but it looks much like the screen on the iAudio U3. Also of note is a slick new GUI/menu system and the main controller, which is the first touch-sensitive type control on an iAudio player. It works nicely - the sensitivity seems to be well tuned.

In case you were wondering, the iAudio 6 is meant to be held horizontally, with the screen on the left side. The diagonal orientation of the touch-strip is perfect for the natural arc of your thumb. The volume controls on the top edge fall within easy reach of your forefinger.

We asked about the MSRP of the iAudio 6, but nothing is set yet. They said it will be available for sale in late February. We also asked about the iAudio X5 - whether a new version was in works, as it's getting kind of old - but they couldn't tell us anything. It's pure speculation, but we think it might follow the same design as the iAudio 6.

Update: Added some features that I forgot to list.

I like the thumb control, but I'd rather have a player that is easier to operate with one hand. The two-hand thing is a draw-back to my gmini.

The horizontal orientation seems a bit wierd, especially when all the text on the front is aligned for portrait use?!?! (Play/Pause is correct though ) I guess it'll work nicely with long filename scrolling etc, though.
The thumb scroll thing is interesting, but surely gonna be a total pain in the arse for any left-handed people.

I still wish Cowon would just do a humpless X5/X6. The M3 was aesthetically one of my favourite players over the last few years. The clean design and solid round recessed buttons were gorgeous. Stupid humpy X5. Grrrrr.

Im not that impressed, they basically released the U3 in slightly larger size.

Battery life therefor better be whopping, otherwise, im not going for cowon...

How is that basically a U3??? It's got a totally different (amazing) design, slighty larger (hd) 4gb memory, AND THE JOYSTICK IS GONE!!!!:) This is the first time I've been impressed with one of Cowon's players..I'm really liking it....to bad it doesnt have enough memory fo rme.

Oh just read the next of the news post and if the x6 has a similar design (and no joystick) with a screen over 2" I can safely say it will probably be my next DAP.

I think I'd like this diagonal touch controller better than the straight one like on my m:robe. With that said, I'm still a joystick guy.

the simplest concept in tech. that they cant grasp of ahold of, and its been there since the tape player was invented....just too dumb to include it, none of these players matter THAT much till they make the power source removable.

WHY is it nonremovable? Does having it powered by a removable battery really make it any less of a DAP?

If it's supposed to be held horizonatlly why are the words written like that? I miss color sound.
What everyone will complain about when it comes out is that the touch strip canal isn't wide enough for their fat thumbs.

Bento: Dont worry, there wont be many making those complaints as iAudio players arent too popular in America......hahaha....

What about ID3 tags, FM Radio en Voice recording?
Does the iaudio 6 support those features.

a removeable battery is one more place on the player that can break or let in dust. i honestly don't think removeable li-ion is much better than removeable. 2 or 3 years down the road, when it does need replacing, what would you rather spend $50 on? a new battery, or technology that is 2 or 3 years ahead of what you have? i already showed you that sony's removeable battery isn't that wonderful, since you can't seem to buy the battery you would need.

Oh, wow. Cowon's truly amazing. Awesome, awesome job.
That thing's tiny.

Hmm. I also do not really see a point in a removeable battery in a DAP...

A removeable battery in theory is a nice thing ... why only in theory ...
1)buying a second one is 50-60$
2)you can only charge one at a time ...

if a player would come with a dock which charges and connects player to pc and also has a place to put a second battery for charging It would be a good thing ... the only reason people will buy a new battery is because the old one is broken (like with older Ipods) ... so If the original battery is good quality, and lasts for 4years or so you'll never need to replace it ...

undesign: did you ever buy an extra battery for one of your players ... (non aa I mean ...) perhaps for your new sony of which you didn't even know that it h

I like what the new iAudio 6 has to offer, and it is an improvement over the U3 IMO. Plus with such a small device and still have USBOTG, and more storage space, which the U3 does not have. I am interested if the iAudio 6 has the same basic features of the X5 (FM Tuner, FM Recorder, Timer Auto Record, etc.) Thanks!

dasmenneke: i had to return the sony as the software did not work. i woulda bought an extra one for sure, though i have 4 AAA batteries for iAudio 5, which, all combined gimme about 40 hours of playtime. And they dont take up much space

Clever, the touch strip. Intuitively scroll both vertically and horizontally...

Looks nice, I don't think this will be easily operated with one hand (weight distribution of the player) which will probably be a pain. I like the horizontal touchstrip though, not a huge fan of the old joystick.

The 2007 delivery thing is referring to the 10 gig perpendicular drives.

read it again, they say the 4gb will not be available, you need to wait till 2007, but then it will be 10gb instead of 4.

wrote ...
Tosh concedes that consumer electronics companies looking to actually mass produce product with the drives will have to wait until 2007 to take delivery. ... So what does Toshiba do after such a boondoggle? Easy, pledge to bump capacities to 10GBs using perpendicular recording techniques.

I don't think Cowon is that stupid that they won't already have a contract with Toshiba - perhaps they are getting all the first units seeing that they are the first manufacturer to use them?

Or perhaps they are not even Toshiba drives?
