iRiver V10 - it's not just a G10
comment: 3 | Tuesday, January 17 (2006) 02:58AM | Posted by Robert Sinke
Well, seems as if iRiver doesn't think we're cool enough for a hands-on with their G10 (pictured left) - you know, the portable gaming device that probably won't make it to outside of Korea anyway (so the reps told us, not sure what to believe right now).

On top of that, there supposedly is this V10 thing as well (pictured right). This one is actually planned for a 2006 release in the United States - being an upscaled version of the G10, it'll probably offer either 8-16GB worth of flash memory or a 1/1.8-inch hard drive (up to 30GB). The V10 is intended to be a WiMax media player, but if time schedules are getting too tight iRiver might drop the sliding keypad-thingy, so that the device might end up looking like an oversized U10.

The source article also mentions this:

iRiver is also looking to increase the V10's chip horsepower to allow it to playback 640x480 video at 30 frames per second. Other possibilities for the V10 include GPS and digital free to air TV functionality.

16 gigs of flash? Wow... this could be very cool... my only concern is about the the strength of the sliding keypad-thingy... you wouldnt want that to break off...

16 gigs of flash would be too expensive, especially from iriver. If it does happen, it'll hopefully be in hard drive form, or smaller flash capacities.

At that size, the battery better be removable and it better last at least 30 hours if using 1AA with mp3 playback.

No excuses, theres enough room in that thing to pack in a lot of goods.

If you think that slick player is going to use AA batteries, then you're insane.

^But why not? The iAudio G3 got almost 54 hours of battery life off of one AA, and its not even optimized. Sigmatel chips can run up to 75 hours off of 1AA, and the sony puckshaped ones can run up to 70 hours off of 1AAA! I see no reason why they cant take advantage of the worlds most popular, easily accesible battery that does have a lot of punch for its small size, and with nimh rechargeable batteries, there are more advantages: cheap rechargeables, lots of power, fast charge times (sony has a charger which charges the batteries in only 15 minutes), multiple uses if not for the mp3 player, huge plus if you buy a pack of 4 nimh AA and a 4 battery charger.

What id ALSO like to see, much like old sony minidiscs is built-in nimh charger. The gumstick batteries on some MDs lasted well over 30 hours per charge in LP2, and were very slim, slim enough to carry 2 or 3 or more extra spares on you if need be, and there wasnt. iPods, iAudios, Sonys, etc all with a non-removable are capable of doing so (internal charge) how much more difficult could it be to add the ability to charge a AA nimh/ni-cd/etc?

Companys have the ability to make excellent products but none of them seem to be going into this direction anymore, a feature as simple and basic as old walkmans from the 80s had.

Unless the mp3 player lasts a LONG time on one charge (40+ real hours), I demand removables, this isnt a huge stretch.

Wasn't the G10 going to be linux based in the os or something? If this comes in 10gigs of flash or more at $375 I think it will do fairly well. I still like the look of the G10 over this as it looks more sleek.
