Archos XS202s is official
comment: 20 | Wednesday, January 18 (2006) 11:05AM | Posted by Robert Sinke
We at DAPreview like keeping you guys (and gals) up-to-date on anything we've previously reported on. Same goes for the story on the black Archos XS202, the so-called "202s".

Well, nothing too special here, but it's nice to mention that Archos did bother to include the XS202s to its own website by now. Compared to the "regular" XS202, the S-edition is a bit more slender in appearance (76 x 59 x 17mm vs 76 x 59 x 19mm). It's also a whopping 2 grams lighter than the 120 gram-heavy XS202. Battery life is still advertised as "up to 17 hours per charge", which is reasonable. We're guessing, however, that the ones buying this edition are mainly going for the all new black outer shell (used to be silver).

Price difference between the XS202 and 202s is a bit hefty, though - still some 20 Euro (nearly $ 25), according to the site's suggested retail prices. It'll cost ya 269.99 Euro to pick up an XS202s from Archos' own webshop (249.99 for the regular XS202).

LINK, our friends over at AMP3 have listed it as well for 159 UKP (230 Euro, CLICK), although it's currently "out of stock".

color screen...what for? I don't really see the point getting color screen without photo/video support...just my opinion....

Does anyone know if there's more changes than just size/weight...and price?

i have two excellent HD players without a color screen and two flash players with color screens and I can tell you that I enjoy using the flash players much more. The color screen is more eye-friendly and just more pleasing to use.

Man, where is Archos headed? They seemed to have lost their way .... If this is how they spend their R&D euros, I'd have to say they're getting out of the DAP market and becoming strictly a PMP/PVR company. Sad ....

Charbax, your link gives a 219.90 Euro price as the cheapest one, not "175 Euro". Regular XS202 = 179.90 Euro. We like to stick to MSRPs, though, as they tend to be more reliable reference material.

and derwersei, yes, we know (see linked news item) - but now it's official .

Nice enough, one thing I noticed is on the 200 and 202 the 'Archos' logo on the front is made with raised metal lettering, the 202s just has it silk screened on. Maybe the raised metal added too much thickness, or maybe the silk screening is just cheaper. Now if they actually make this available we'll be getting somewhwere. I'm also interested in seeing what happens to the original 202; is it gone permanently now or will it reappear?? And is this the extent of improvements to this design or will there be a major upgrade sometime (color screen, text viewng, games, video)?? It's a nice form factor, i'd like to see it developed further.

Why do people like this so much? It looks ugly in my op. Also, on the site, they stole images from mpio.

It's the smallest 20gig dap on the market. Good ergonomics, good screen to size ratio, simple controls, plus it's UMS, has on-board delete, move and rename, OTF playlists, bookmarks - a lot of good stuff in a small package.

Is $230 North America price a safe bet?

You'd think if they had to tinker with the case at all they'd make a more interesting upgrade... unless they don't want to cannibalize the existing market. Still, I thought this would have a big batter gain over the regular 202 or something.
