Sandisk Sansa e200 - updated product page and release date
comment: 41 | Wednesday, January 25 (2006) 11:45AM | Posted by Lone
We brought news of the new Sansa e200 here, and got a closer look at CES here. It's the 2/4/6 GB flash DAP from Sandisk which is certainly meant to compete with the iPod nano; it offers a color screen, FM radio/recording, a microSD slot, and even video playback. MSRP is $ 200, $ 250, and $ 300 for the 2,4, and 6 GB models respectively. Looks pretty good at this point.

Sandisk has updated their e200 product page with some new info, including the rated battery life (listed at 20 hours playing 128 kbps Mp3's), and new release date, which has been changed from "end of February" to "end of March." Probably some sort of memory shortage, since Sandisk is producing all of it themselves.

Does any of you know why on-the-fly FM recording is not available in Europe? It seems like a pretty odd thing to choose to leave out.. it still has the FM tuner and voice recording here.

I am extremely interested in this player, my Karma is on it's last leg and I am looking for a replacement. My question is, the Karma has a powerful amp I think it is 50mw to each channel. I generally listen to my music around 20-25 with the Karma (I am outside running, working out in the gym, and on the bus, that is why the volume is so high). Anyways I wondering if sandisk generally uses powerful amps or if they are the little 10mw to each channel amps like alot of flash players? Before anyone says I need to buy some IEM's so the volume isn't so high, I am already looking for a pair. Thanks in Advance

...ugh, so many choices now...

Should I:

- Just get the Vision M now.
- Wait for the Toshiba S Series.
- Wait for the Sandisk E200
- Or buy a few smaller players like a new mobiblu or something.

Leaning towards waiting for the S series. I need a new large capacity player and it seems everyone has a Vision M now.

Maybe wait? If the sandisk somehow turns out to be horrible you can stil get the others...but if its good then if you got a player you might want the sandsik. I think i'm gonna wait. (btw are you phycic? cause your mental list is exactly like mine)

262K colors that the Vision:M vs the 65K that the Gigabeat S-series has (I believe) is a big factor for me. It'll also be damn hard to top the GUI in the Vision:m, it has so many cool features. I personally don't like the cross navigation but it's not a big deal.

:/

20 hours of battery life, for flash.....bah. Was hoping for 30 or more. Woulda been sold i think. While i'll still give this thing a go, but for now, im gonna have to chose between:

-Sony NW-HD5
-Sigmatel Based MP3 players
-Sansa e200

Jeez, 20 hours, thats really disappointing cuz im almost positive it will be more like 13 hours when using mp3s rated at 192kbps.

Well if anyones going to give the ipod nano a run for its money in terms of value/capacity (in flash) it's these guys. I can't wait to see this player in person, it would be nice to see more pics of the UI...

^it does everything the ipod does, has 2gb more memory + unlimited expandable memory, double the battery life + removable w/ non-warranty-voiding bullshit when doing so, fm/recording for more music, etc for a lower price (sandisks are always priced cheaper).

Ok, so.......why would I want an iPod over the above said? I dont see any reason at all.

Does it support direct mp3 line-in recording?

The 20 hour battery life is disappointing. That’s yet another reason why it’s a mistake to design a flash device around a proprietary battery instead of the tried and true AA. My G3 gets 35+ hours on a single AA battery charge, and if the battery does run out while I’m using it, there are immediate remedies available. The only reason the e200 interests me at all is the high storage capacity of its flash.

A full-color screen and movie/image viewing on flash devices is just a wasteful gimick. Think about it, how often will you be watching a video/image while partaking in a physical activity? If pocket-video/image viewing were important to me, such as while on a long plane flight, I’d be using a HDD-based device for it anyway since it has a bigger screen and more memory.

It didn't say anything about line-in recording on their product page, but as lone said they keep updating their page so no ones entirely sure as of now.

They need to also give this thing OGG support. Then it'd really have a huge storage advantage over other flash players.

undesign, the nano is less than half the size.

expandable memory isn't that appealing since its a format that isn't widely available yet.

retail price for the 6GB is $50 more than the 4GB nano. comparing the same models, the prices are the same.

replaceable battery doesn't mean anything unless the battery is widely available. why would you need to replace the battery if you were in warranty?

@zip

sigh... since when did being small and thin become a pro? Is there such thing as too small, is the nano too small? Will size affect durability?

How do things become popular? demand, the more demand there is for the micro sd slot the more strength it will gain. Also that fact that "its there" is always comforting.

Its priced to compete with the ipod nano...

Your not very optimistic are you? I'm sure if it has a removable battery the sandisk will supply the batt on their website. A removable battery is useful for long trips, people who spend long periods of time away from the plug outlet. They're also for people who make sensible purchases, people who don't treat there player like a disposable camera.

I'd say smaller and thinner is generally better, though it's pretty misleading to say what Zip said, that it's " less than half the size. " That seems to imply that the Sansa is huge; really .5" thin is easily pocketable. Not Nano pocketable, but I'd bet most people couldn't tell much of a difference between the two in a pocket.

small is good because we're talking about things we carry with us.
did you see the arstechnica review of the nano? i think the nano is as durable as we should expect any player to be.

i like this player just like i like the vision:m, but i also know there are things about the nano that are desireable.

a replaceable battery is good for trips if it is a standard size. how many people will buy spare batteries, put them into their player to charge them, and then replace them with another battery so they can have a spare? would you call your purchase of the vision:m un-sensible? we also don't know how much the battery will cost or how much stock they will have (like the example of the over priced and out of stock nwhd5 battery i have presented before).

in addition, the nano will have been released 6 months if this becomes available in march. it will be due for a refresh (either prices or updates).

And BTW, if pocket-video/image viewing were truly important to me (it isn’t - On a plane I can always watch a full-screen DVD on my laptop), I would get a full-on PSP.

have there been an dissection photos of it?

i assure you, it won't be as cheap or widely available as the ipod nano battery. if you can't solder 3 large wires, you shouldn't attempt changing a 'non-replaceable' battery.

thats true, without the nano 4-6gb flash players would be years away
