SoniqCast, the resurrection? (A-3000,3100,3200,3300)

In other, non "overpriced audiophile boombox" news:

If you're a loyal follower of DAPreview's near-constant flow of jibberish, you might have heard of something called "SoniqCast" before. If you're a hardcore know-it-all, been-there-right-from-the-very-start follower of DAPreview, you might actually remember the original SoniqCast Aireo - a rather strange player back then, since it had WiFi support (for file transfers), a 1.5GB hard drive (so it had to compete with stuff like the Creative MuVo2 and the Rio Audio Nitrus) and a bodywork the size of Mt. Everest (compared to other micro-hdd players).

Then there was the Aireo 2, which supposedly added Internet browsing and such to the original concept, on top of a capacity upgrade (20GB hard drive). Not sure if it ever actually made it to many places around the globe.

You'd expect the company to be down and out by now, given the limited successes gained from these Aireo thingies... but apparently, SoniqCast is prepping a whole new line-up for 2006-2007.

A-3000 (left)
  • Bright 2.2" color LCD display for photo and video
  • 4GB or 8GB flash storage
  • FMTX
  • FM receiver
  • FM transmitter
  • WiFi access
  • DRM10 compatible
  • Wireless downloads (WiFi and 4G cellular)
  • Measures 98 x 54 x 13mm
  • Battery life: 14 hours per charge
  • TV output
  • USB2.0 UMS compatible

A-3100 (left)
  • Same as A-3000, except for:
  • 2.6-inch color display (according to the PDF, site says 2.4-inch)
  • 30 or 40GB hard drive
  • Measures 104 x 66 x 19mm

A-3200 (center)
  • Same as A-3100, except for:
  • 3.5" color LCD display

A-3300 (right)
  • Same as A-3100, except for:
  • 2.4-inch color display
  • Instant messaging
  • Email
  • Web surfing
  • Keyboard

Seems as if SoniqCast teamed up with PassAlong and Audible.com content-wise, among others. Access partners listed are SBC (FreedomLink) and T-Mobile (HotSpot). Interesting aspects listed under the "SonicSync Software" header include "direct to device wirless content downloads", "device to device file sharing", "Internet connectivity", "Wireless network drive", "HotSpot locator" and "Streaming Audio & Video".

There are some funky accessories too, like the "big screen video glasses" and a car docking system. We'll have to wait and see when (if?) all of this stuff will unvaporize, and at what costs.

...The center one doesn't have visible controls.

They look fake, needs better screens.

The A-3000 is a very feature packed flash player. Design is great, but not horrible either. I like em.

8GB of flash is great, but 14 hours of power is pathetic, and the USB-charged battery is most likely not even going to live up to those expectations.

I'd like to start seeing potential powerhouse devices that use multiple AA batteries instead of Li. Like four 2500 mAh AA batteries. I wonder how long those would last for a device like this or the Sandisk e200.

I am too lazy to see how the size matches up with the competition. Anyone want to do it?

So wait.. how do you control the A-3200? I searched on their website for this answer to no anvil... in fact... the actual existance of these players seems very questionable... maybe its the lack of live shots... or the lack of specific specs... or the fact that the entire website seems to repeat the information it delievers time and time again... If any of these players DO come out Q2, Ill be interested...

Of course they don't exist yet. I predict actual production for these and anything announced at CeBitch to be June-August. The only tech company I know of which has actual product for sale at time of announcement is Apple.

Link says "2006-2007 product offering". Figuring it's still far from "done".

Actually I mis-predicted. Anything that was announced at CES, back in January, will not be available for sale until June-August. Stuff announced @ CeBitch will show up for sale in October.

Not really true 608, the Gigabeat s (announced at CES) is scheduled to be released in a few days.

It could turn out to be wrong. However, you can't be sure until you see product available for sale. My prediction is based on how things went last year.

I guess I fall into the "hardcore know-it-all" category... I wanted one of those original Aireo's, but was put off by the small capacity.

Then, I REALLY wanted one of the 20gb Aireo 2's. I watched them on and off as the release date was continually pushed back for the past two years or so. They're finally available at [Linky] , but are unfortunately faily obsolete by now (Wi-Fi and FM TX are definitely cool, but 20gb, grayscale screen, and probably bulky size aren't so hot). There is, however, a $75 "early bird" rebate, that brings the price down to about $325... not unreasonable.

Believe it or not, I saw those exact PDF's several months ago. They were briefly posted on the site, but mysteriously disappeared after a few days. I think it has something to do with that "confidential" comment at the end . (perhaps someone should save them to their hard drive this time...)

Those are definitely interesting products, but are also definitely "art"... I highly doubt they exist in any useable form. On top of that, given SonicCast's track record... I wouldn't count on seeing them any time soon .

Pity .

608zz: Just so you know AA or AAA will not have the runtime or power as a li-ion/poly of the same size (li=more power, runtime, smaller).

Bob2300NX,
What mAh ratings are you comparing? I can get 2800 mAh AA batteries for any device that takes that size standard, yet apparently, some (at least) of the Li-ion batteries that are built into devices can be 1800 mAh.

Oh, also, with NiMH rechargeable AA, runtime is practically a non-issue, since they can be replaced on the spot with a freshly-charged spare. I do this with my iAudio G3 and recharge during the drive home, in the same charger that I use for my digital camera batteries. It's the best power-management system going.
