Ugly DAP returneth in color - Netac C708
comment: 11 | Wednesday, March 01 (2006) 11:34AM | Posted by Robert Sinke
Not much has changed since Netac managed to come up with the redefinition of "Ok, that is pretty ugly" - the MuStik C700. They slapped a color screen on there, added movie playback functionality, shaved of some length & width before pasting it on the C708's backside and managed to make it a bit more lightweight... above all, they kept the "toilet seat meets answering machine" looks intact.

  • Capacity: 20GB, 30GB, 40GB, 60GB
  • USB2.0, UMS compatible
  • MP3, WMA, WAV, OGG Vorbis support
  • AVI file format support (MTV conversion), JPEG/BMP picture viewing
  • 260k, 1.88-inch color TFT LCD
  • e-Book support (TXT format)
  • FM tuner, voice recorder
  • Built-in Li-in battery, 1800mAh
  • Net Weight: 156g(Approx)
  • Dimensions: 105.8mm (L) x 66.5mm(W) x 22mm(H)

Seems like it's already out there, somewhere (did anyone actually buy one, perhaps?), seeing as how there's a firmware upgrade and all. Also seems like this is one of those crazy sites driving FireFox all cuckoo.

An 1800 mAh battery, hmmm? That's the same as the one I use for my iAudio G3 flash device, but since mine is replaceable, I could go as high as 2800 mAh if I wanted to. Now, can someone tell me why is it that HD-based devices always use a built-in, Li-ion battery, rather than a standard replaceable? I wonder what mAh rating the batteries are for devices by Apple, Creative, Cowon, Archos, etc are.

toilet seat meets answering machine -- ROTFL!

I don't think it's ugly, it just looks like a cell phone. Specs are impressive enough, but what's the battery life?

Looks dumb. Anyone see the resemblance to the iriver imp 1100?

Careful, Netac might come after you with a lawsuit for "defamation of character" or something...the company isn't shy about protecting their good name. They claim to be the inventors of external flash memory drives and apparently companies like Samsung license their technology. They've gone after Sony in China and just a couple of weeks ago, PNY in the U.S. for patent infringement...pretty unusual to read about Chinese companies suing U.S. companies for IP theft.

Maybe its the color scheme, but yeah, that thing does look pretty "suqi" (vulgar, in poor taste, hackneyed, banal, trite).

heh, yeah... we've talked to them before. they seemed very proud of that particular patent. "Can we please see your products?" Guy waves patent at us. "Products?" Guy waves more papers containing the same patent information at us. "Ok bye".

Forgot to mention they're not too popular with online resellers in China; very few Netac products found on the big auction/reseller sites...maybe for reasons of their zealous use of the legal system??

I could only find one C700 (previous gen) 20gb player for the rough equivalent of $270....that's well into iAudio M5L, IRiver H10, and Sony HD-5 territory (China prices).

I wish them the best of luck with suing us, surely it'll cost more money than they'll ever be able to make out of it .

But any publicity is good publicity, imo Even if your player does look like one of those pizza oven spatulas.

It most certainly does look like a cell phone. And it appears to have eaten way too much at McDonald's. Really, and people complain that the Vision M is thick. This thing has a smaller screen, looks wider and taller and thicker than the Vision M. Although the screen quality sounds good. 260,000 colors, not bad. I'd never buy it though, I'd get annoyed of the people asking why I have headphones plugged into my cell phone.

It's a tongue. Why would anyone want an MP3 player shaped like a tongue?
