CeBIT 2006: Dissapointments
comment: 16 | Monday, March 13 (2006) 03:28AM | Posted by Martinp
Section A: Japanese Companies

We trudged all the way to hall two to check out the Toshiba Gigabeat Series (especially the S) and all we get to hear is: “Oh, we aren’t going to be releasing this product in Europe, so we are not displaying it here.”

Okay Toshiba – what is wrong with you guys? The Gigabeat S has a load of potential and it is one of the few modern 1.8’’ DAPs on the market at the moment. It’s like they don’t want to make any money or something.

NEC did exactly the same thing. Their first and latest DAP, the VoTol, is also not on display at CeBIT. This is pretty lame, because we would love to have checked it out.

Section B: Generic DAPs

Instead we were bombarded with generic DAP badness from random small Chinese, Korean and Taiwanese companies. You know something is not right when there is a booth from company X that are only displaying plastic mock-ups. When you ask if they have any working models they just answer with “No”. Nothing like: “No, but our stuff will rock!” - Just a plain and simple “No”. Why do these guys even bother coming to trade fairs?

Section C: Companies that are supposed to be at CeBIT but are not

Weirdly enough Archos feels that they are way too important for a petty trade fair like the CeBIT. Or they are way too poor. Boo Archos - minus 100 respect points for you.

Sigmatel also has a booth shared booth, uh well, sort of shared booth, but they were not actually there when we visited them on Saturday. They somehow managed to hop in with the US Department of Commerce. They *should* be back on Monday or Tuesday so we will try and check them out then to see how their latest chipset with Rio technology (STMP 3600) is going.

So Toshiba aren't releasing the S series over here in Europe? :O
Good job I didn't hold out for it then, but that really sucks and really is a stupid move, the F series did pretty well here.

Absolutely nothing to do with Toshiba or NEC, but as an EFL teacher here in China, I've been watching (well, reading) with great interest as "disappointment" has been transformed over the last couple of years or so into the increasingly accepted and used "dissapointment". Always fascinating how language and orthography evolve.

OK, back on topic: both Cowon and IRiver deserve another round of boo's as well for failing to take advantage of CeBIT to whet the appetites of all the faithful.

Heh, I think in the second picture that's the cheap clone called "Zen iPod" or something funny like that.

Actually the VOTOL isn't NEC's first DAP. I don't know how many they've had in the past, but one of the first ones was several years ago .. and it was basically a rebranded Cowon CW200.

Boo! Hiss!

Although seeing as I've never bought a Toshiba product in my life...may be an over-reaction on my part.

Still would prefer the choice to reject them

Would it make sense to release the 'S series' minus the Vongo bull that has no market penetration in Europe?

It seems that with the lack of big new items at CeBit that maybe the convention isn't as important as it once was or maybe the european market isn't as important as it once was or maybe they've run out of ways to be innovative.

I don't know I'm just guessing here so don't come after me. Doesn't it seem odd that so many manufacturers aren't showing off anything new.

Wow dissapointing news for Europeans re: Toshiba S

But CeBIT as a whole sounds pretty underwhelming...not much news breaking at all :\

Can hardly wait for the Sigmatel report. Surprised they didn't have a booth of their own, but as you said it's surprising that some companies that do have booths don't have products to show.

My guess is that since the Gigabeat is based on PMC 2.0 (WinCE-based), it only supports MTP. Companies that release players in Europe generally release MSC (mass storage class) devices.

I'm not sure if PMC 2.0 supports MSC yet.

^Players like Creative have a presence in Europe and they are MTP, so that kind've rules out that theory. Toshiba just doesn't know how to market their player, just as Creative doesn't. I don't see any point of what Toshiba is doing though.

Might be the same reason they didnt bring the X-series to the states?

It's not a theory really. General policy of most of the companies are MTP for US and Japan (although some MSC in Japan), and MSC for Europe. That's because MTP + DRM 10 music service support is still weak for Europe. Most of the stores use PD-DRM (DRM 9) which works with MSC devices. Unfortunately I can't name the companies who choose to support this policy, but you can look at websites and figure it out pretty easily. It's a market-drive policy that may change as DRM10 adoption begins in Europe.

Some companies choose to release MTP devices in Europe to simplify their product lines (2 firmware builds cost more than 1).

Who the hell cares about Archos. I hate Archos, their stuff looks ugly as hell. Please don't kill me for this.
