The S Series Saga
comment: 19 | Tuesday, March 28 (2006) 07:33PM | Posted by chicubs
We have all been waiting for the Toshiba Gigabeat S Series release. Its size, design, GUI, and storage space (30gb/60gb) all earned the Gigabeat its many admirers who posted many times in anticipation here and here. One user even made a cute little google picture page.

Originally, back when it was first announced, we were told "Spring 2006". Ok, that is a pretty generic release point, so no use putting stock in it. Could mean march, could mean may. Its February, and Spring is soon!

Then a few webshops start giving the Gigabeat its own page. Eager potential buyers started calling up stores. Computerbrain and hideflifestyle tell them March 1st. As it gets close, place like Hidef move the release date back, but we still have Computerbrain! Sure, its not an authorized dealer, but what the heck! ...Closer, closer,...darn, no cigar! Oh well, March 1st seemed a little ambitious anyway. Computerbrain quickly says March 6. Maybe theres hope! ...Alas, turned up empty again. Of course, they then claim March 11 and we have firgured out their scheme.

By then, all the reputable shops have the dates listed around March 27 to March 31. Crutchfield, a company many of us love, had it listed for March 27 and even offered a $ 50 dollar off deal! Many, including myself, rushed to reserve our unit. Feeling confident, we are all quite pleased with ourself. My signiture even states that the review is "coming soon".

Then disaster strikes again. On March 23, 2006 @ 2:41 PM (EST), mygigabeat posts news stating that hideflifestyle has told them:
Looks like we'll now have them the 2nd week of April...Toshiba's going through an Oracle conversion so if they don't ship this week it'll be April.
Sadness.

We still have good ol Crutchfield, though. Maybe they'll get units earlier than others. Sadly, later that day, Crutchfield pushes back their release date ... to MAY 1ST!!!!. The gigabeat-faithful are furious! The worst is yet to come...

On March 28, 2006, we find out Crutchfield has delayed the release yet again ... to MAY 31ST!!! More anger erupts from the loyalists.

This all probably has to do with the release of Windows Media Player 11. The two products may well end up being released on the same day for all we know.

I contacted Toshiba's PR agency and they sort of side-stepped the issue, so, sadly, I have no new news to really report.

This is all rather ridiculous especially considering that the Creative ZVM may actually be superior in terms of features and GUI. Why wait, when we can have a better or at least equally satifying product in the ZVM?

The saga continues ...

Nice post Alex, definitely conveys how frustrated and pissed a lot of site members are at Toshiba's PR mess.

Yeah, good post. If I was waiting to buy this player I'd be crushed. Hopefully these estimated dates are exaggeratted.

No way, if they said Spring 06 and Vista was originally called for Fall 06, they can't push it back just for telling us the wrong time so they can suck people in. Maybe the delay of Vista has something to do with it, whatever WMP!! was supposed to do was delayed also, I dunno, I don't get the whole thing.

I like how you say that the CZV:M "may" have better features. The worst part about this Gigabeat is that they're not clear as to what the features are going to be! We have speculated, only wmv, flash upgrades with divx, direct connect to TiVo, built in 60" projector screens, but who knows what is ACTUALLY going to be on the Gigabeat (or what technically can be available). All we have are some dimensions, pictures, and guesses. If they would tell us what we're waiting for, maybe people won't give up the wait. Toshiba's gotta play this game a little smarter or maybe even release some information that they already KNOW about the Gigabeat. How can they go wrong with that?

I think microsoft is just getting lazy... Its a shame, the gigabeat was looking very promising. That size with 60GB capacity would have been great...

You know what the problem is? They announce their product before it's released. That's one thing I'll give apple: they're actually able to get the product out there once it's released, and get a lot of them out there.

This is just what happens when retailers pull dates out of their butt. Toshiba and MS said "Spring '06". That will be accurate if they release within 3 months. Don't put words in Toshiba's mouth. The only liars so far are the retailers trying to lock-in our cash.

Also, it's not waiting for Vista.

Sorry, this is the same S Series that isn't coming to Europe because we hate Bush? Or more probably 'cos the EU have fined Microsoft?

Seriously, who needs Vongo? I don't need Vongo Toshiba. Strip it out and bring it out in Europe!

They did this with the F Series in the UK, it ways May... then June... and finally it came out smoothing like 22 June.

And with the WMP 11 thing, i doubt that will be out before Vista, and vista has been delayed until 2007.

And yeah, come on Toshiba release it in Europe!

Vongo is rubbish anyway. You only keep the film for aslong as the DRM detects your subscription status. You can't put it on a DVD-R or anything like that

I'd much prefer it if Darth Vader...sorry Gates does a Universal UK - buy a DVD and get two digital copies - one for your PC/laptop, and another for your portable device

I hate to say it, but this is Toshiba's m.o. in the U.S.

Allow me, an F40 owner, to explain. When the F-series was launched there was the same guessing game about the release date. Then it showed up and there was a clear distortion in the sound.

Toshiba wouldn't acknowledge the issue.

So, we all sat around trying to figure out what to do. Then, eight months later, we get word that Toshiba Japan has released a new firmware that fixes the sound issue.

Toshiba US is silent. F-series owners who ask about the new firmware are told it doesn't exist, or that it might not come here.

Finally an owner figures out how we can upgrade our own players with the Japanese firmware. Of course, thereby voiding the warranty.

Then, two months later an owner who sent his player to Toshiba for repair gets it back with a new US firmware. Other owners call and are told it does exist, but Toshiba US will only mail out an update CD, not post it.

Then, the owners who requested the update disc, get cards in the mail telling them it's on backorder.

Toshiba clearly doesn't want to succeed in the States. They have the worst customer service I have ever encountered, and have done nearly everything that could to alienate us, loyal F-series owners.

I've outgrown my F40. I'd get an 60gb X5 right now if it weren't for the 9999 file limit. I am switching to a ZV:M as soon as a 60 comes out.

Toshiba, I tried to work with you, I wanted to believe in you, but you destroyed it all.
