4GB Zen Micro Photo Coming Soon?
comment: 17 | Thursday, March 30 (2006) 03:06AM | Posted by Michael
A member over at epiZENter recently posted a link to an online retailer (J&R Computer World) that has posted a pre-order page for a 4GB Zen Micro Photo.
Specs:

  • Unit Size WxHxD: 2" x 3.3" x 0.7" / Weight: 3.8oz with battery
  • 160x160 OLED screen resolution
  • MP3,WMA, and WAV
  • Signal-to-Noise Ratio: up to 98dB
  • Choose from 8 different backlight color options (fire, jungle, pastel, romantic, peace, cool, earth, and vibrant)
  • FM radio, FM Recorder and voice recorder
  • Store and view contacts, calendar and tasks
  • Customizable main menu
  • Has USB 2.0 compatible interface for rapid transfers

The dimensions are the same as the 8GB version, so it doesn't sound like they've moved to flash memory. Everything else also seems to be the same, although I don't recall seeing multiple color backlights being listed for the original ZMP. The pre-order price is listed at $179.99. For comparison the 8GB ZMP is retailing for $229 but you can actually get one right now from J&R for 169.99 after rebate. We might hear an official announcement for this later today.

So it'd be better to get the 8gb if you shop from J&R

Some may go for 4gb but I don't really feel it...esp when you have several 4gb flash choices

It could be, but I would've expected the dimensions to be smaller. Flash would be more attractive to people.

It could be flash...and Creative are too lazy to change the casing

for a dap that thick it should last much longer than its rated battery life time. imo, that > nano mainly because the battery is removable on the fly.

regardless, it is a very nice dap, if the battery lasted 25+ hours and everything remained the same, id definately consider it.

Yeah, I didn't see any battery info listed. Probably the same though. *shrugs*

edit: nevermind, it's listed in the paragraph above the specs.

its in the top paragraph, but all the specs are just from the 8GB
"It also uses less power to give you longer Battery life (up to 15 hours of use per charge)."

this seems pointless to me...they should just make the 8GB model at the $179 price, add the different lighted piping colors, & leave it alone.

OR, they could bring out a 2nd generation ZMP that's flash memory - 4GB to 6 or 8GB, with a smaller form factor, still the 262k screen, & obviously improved battery life - 20-25hrs at least - due to the flash mem.

the ZMP is already a very small DAP with the exception of the thickness - it's really not that thick but relative to newer DAP's it is. To just put out a new/same version with less storage at a lesser price, when the prices of micro HDD DAP's are already dropping, seems pointless to me.

Makes no sense if it's not flash or if it doesn't cost half the price. Even if it's $50 less, who wouldn't spend $50 to get an extra 4gigs? This needs to be flash or it doesn't need to be.

The different backlight option colors are probably equivalent to the different color themes you can chose from on the 8GB ZMP.

Er... Allen ... Creative is being creative in reinventing one of their players....and yes, they did it again:-). Well, not quite yet. This could be just another rumor.
