Meizu Mini Player, the unofficial iPod video
comment: 54 | Monday, April 24 (2006) 02:29PM | Posted by Robert Sinke
Meizu, one of the more reputable DAP manufacturers in China (seeing as how some of their models, like the X6, made it e.g. Sweden and whatnot) recently pimped their newest device, the "Mini Player" during some trade fair. Chinese IT technology website IT.com.cn was invited to take a better look at the concept... which does bear some resemblances to iPodesque stuff.

Some features : 79 x 48 x 10mm, 2.4-inch QVGA screen, built-in voice recorder, FM tuner, video playback supported, Ogg Vorbis supported. Prices according to a Meizu representative - 512MB: 699 Yuan, 1GB: 850 Yuan, 2GB: 1099 Yuan and 4GB:1599 Yuan (70, 85, 110, & 160 Euro).

LINK & LINK (also see Meizu's website)

Interesting to look at: the initial circuit board + a very... original kind of graphical user interface: click (yes, we know - it might just be a sticker or a piece of paper instead of a real working GUI).

Thanks, Mr_Anderson

haha, I guess if they're going to get copyright lawsuits, they might as well get everybody involved....

altho with this player not incorporating a touch screen interface, or only having up to 4GB, I doubt that apple would be worried about this.

I'm starting to see more upcoming DAP's supporting Ogg....

if the battery is removable on the go and lasts more than 20 hours, i'll buy it.

Battery lasts for 20 hours and it's probably not removable.

Are we talking about flash here? I mean, what's up with the cheap prices?

Prices in China aren't half bad... normally, I'd be inclined to say "but this reflects in the quality of their hardware"; yet Meizu is a pretty ok company afaik.

Now that's pretty damn nice.. better usage of real estate for the screen.. me likey... I would pick this up in a heartbeat..

.. or if iRiver would just release a U10 with some decent storage space.. it would be a tough decision between the two..

koppite: thats not the issue, im around one enough, but i will not allow myself to worry about "gotta make sure i plug it in to recharge for tomorrows trip" even if it lasts 20 hours. the point is: less hassle.

and long lasting removable batteries are a LOT less hassle.

I would'nt mind the slim lithium ion batteries over typical alkaline AA-AAA batteries, or even the rechargeble li-Ion AA-AAA batteries, as long as there is an access to the battery, & the battery that's used is available from 3rd party suppliers into the future.

I still have my Sony Walkman WM-20 casstte tape player from back in 1983, & all I have to do is drop a AA battery into it, & it still works fine.

A lot of today's DAP's are built as if they are intended to be disposable: when the built-in li-Ion battery starts to die out 3-5 years from now, even if you can pry into the player without breaking it, it will probably be very difficult to find a compatible battery that will work for your player, even tho your player would still work great if it had a new battery.

The idea is to just go out and buy a new DAP for $250-$300, & sell your old DAP on ebay for parts.....

I understand the removable battery part, different people want different things. Why people have to state it over and over again is a different thing entirely...

[/off topic]

As for the player itself, I am still failing to see why companies are making small flash VIDEO players. 512mb for video? Yes, I could understand that you could get several well compressed movies into 4gb... but not a 512mb device. Seems stupid to me.

WHOA!

I translated the page with the circuit board to english, heres what its got:

"2nd, about M6 power supply plan: In M6 uses sets at the lithium battery way. But simultaneously provides the transparent fine ingenious battery box to be possible to choose the add-on component, may admits at the same time the AAA battery and the entire machine. Like this sets at in the lithium radio electricity situation to be allowed to charge or also to use. "

AAA battery add on pack! BOOYA! Just like on my old sony minidiscs. This is great! Im definately keeping my eye out on this baby

Just noticed one of the images (on the Meizu website) says "dual core technique". What do you think the chances are that it's dual processor like the Karma? Possible gapless in this thing?

seems to be some sort of buzz word these days... Dual core DAPs (Teclast also had some of these things recently). Have yet to see if it's going to be of any use.

Any info on:

UMS vs MTP?
Supported video formats and fps rate?
Coming to the US?
Meizu's history on sound quality?
Meizu's history on GUIs/Interfaces?

This thing looks quite awesome! Small, slim and a LOT cheaper then U10 !? Meizu DAP's has very good sound quality, good enough to battle iAudio.

Since i'm in Shanghai atm i feel obligated to go look up a retailer... The prices seems great and you seem to get a lot more then when you're buying a nano...

Keep you're eyes on this one please DAPreview!? A review would be schmoooooooot!

the previous models of meizu were pretty much iaudio ripoffs, but fortunately of the better kind, meaning that both the user gui and the sound quality r close to iaduio levels.

to kuhla:

UMS

Video:Xvid(SP) 15 FPS (same as iriver U10,because of same main CPU,Samsung 300Mhz,for video playback,and a sub-CPU(from Philips) for audio playback,guess:a PNX0101 or PNX0102).

TO US: NOT in the near future

Sound quality: WORTH its price or even more

UI: Once copied iAudio's,and now the iPod's

Nice. Very nice. Huge screen for a flash DAP (or any DAP for that matter).
Looks like it takes standard USB connector and probably charges via this aswell. Good moves. No proprietary connections.
Just a little comment on video / flash mem. Considering the capabilities of chips these days, video isn't difficult to achieve. Also, taking into account the size of the colour screen... if they didn't support video... they would be criticised for it. It's a novelty on flash players... but a nice novelty. Just enjoy the huge screen for easy clear browsing.

Then again... with 4GB... you could get a few divx movies on there, as well as a bunch of music... just to get you through a long journey. Not much "choice", but if you planned ahead, it could be sufficient.

[sarcasm] battery add-on pack! Now there's a new concept [/sarcasm]

I used to be REALLY into having a removable battery. Honestly though, I don't ever find myself using them. Both my Treo 650 and Canon camerra have removable batteries. The only time I remove one from the Canon is to recharge it.

The only time I would require a remoavable battery is if it has terrible battery life. Frankly, I'd rather have an internal battery with a great life instead of a removable one I need to swap.

Yeah - this looks slick.
Would definately give iPod a run for the money, given the same kind of marketing and endorsements

Agree with Flid; bigger screen should mean clearer menus, easer browsing. Though 2.4" is impressive.

Actually, I think an AA battery add-on is a great idea - gives you the option if you know you might not be able to recharge in time (like on holiday).

USB-mini should be the defacto for all DAPs (for non-OTG or USB-Key type

Anything looks like an Ipod to Engadget. I can't believe they called this an Ipod rip-off, and compared to the other DAPs out there, I'm sure Meizu wasn't trying to trick people into thinking this was an Ipod.

I'm with you guys, this is one of those few Chinese DAPs that made me take a look at it a few times.
