Archos XS104 out and about
comment: 17 | Thursday, June 01 (2006) 10:06AM | Posted by Robert Sinke
Well, the "May" window ended up being more like a "May/June" release date - but in the end it's the availability that counts. Archos is apparently ready to pump out their XS104 by now.

The 4GB (micro-hdd) XS104 measures 91 x 43 x 14mm, weighs 80 grams, comes with a 262k color display (1.5-inch diameter) and the ability to display pictures, as well as output MP3/WMA (DRM) and WAV files. It officially costs 199 Euro, but we managed to find it for 179.90 Euro already.

Big question being: why would you want to buy this instead of, say, a 4GB SanDisk Sansa e250 (flash memory-based) or a 20GB Archos XS202s/iriver H10? They're almost equally-expensive, and there's little going for the XS104 when compared to such material.

Archos is dead to me if they don't release something new by the end of the year and I'm not talking about color screen versions to their past players either. The black one does look nice but provide some video or extra features.

This device is announced at 150 dollars when it gets released in USA.

Just compare it with the Ipod Nano, same GB, half price, small nearlz as an ipod shuffle.. OLED colour screen for max usage and lowest battery life.

This is the first OLED colour screen from Archos, just wait for the next gen 4" OLED products that I am sure Archos is going to announce soon.

they need to make and focus on another gmini that fullfils its name unlike the gmini500 imo

Charbax: the only OLED pmp that I've seen (with a decent oled screen) was the NeoSol? and it was expensive as hell...

and like robert sinke says; the sansa is a much better deal and sansa>nano anyday...

they should just make a gmini 402 with 4/6gb of flash, usb host, sd card (support for 1-2-4gb cards), and because of the flash memory a battery life of 30h audio and 6h video, that would kick ass.
Also B-frames support should be improved in the archos devices, as I've heard numerous complaints about it.

Instead of a flash based gmini 402, it would be great if Archos could combine the xs202 and 402, borrowing the 402's functionality and 202's size to make the gmini 302.

(wishful thinking)

not only is it more than double the size of the ipod nano, it is 3 times the size of the ipod shuffle. it is also not half the price of the ipod nano. it is 3/5th the price (if the quoted price is indeed accurate). its battery life is rated the same as the ipod nano, and previous companies oled attemps in micro harddrive players have fallen short of the ipod nano's screen.

I'm with those waiting for a serious upgrade
to the 202. Add color, video, text viewing, usb host
etc to that form factor and it would be the ideal player.
Maybe a boost in sound quality, too....I understand
Sigmatel has a chipset available. They could call it
the X'SK'202 - Super Karma.

Using the OLED screen means more and better screens using less power.

The next kick-ass product that Archos is probably preparing is the size of the Gmini400 but with a 4" OLED screen the size of the AV500, wifi, removable battery and modules for WiMAX, 3.5G, Camera, Video Recording, GPS and more.. And probably that Archos has a working prototype of a 4" OLED touchscreen device in their labs. The ultimate device will run software for VOIP, IM, EMAIL, BROWSING, and more. Probably running Linux OS Qtopia 2.2. The screen resolution might be more than 480x272, it might be 800x480 or even 1024x600. Basically what Archos is probably preparing is a device which is more than twice as fast, twice as small and twice as cheap as any 2006 UMPC or 2006 products from Sony and Apple.

The actual name of this product is the Archos 104 (no more XS designation), and the price will be $159.99 for the 4GB player.

So basically zip, your reason why this is worse than the nano is because it's bigger. I'm sure some people would rather save 100$ than have something as small as a nano.

i never said it was worse. i was correcting Charboxes multiple errors.

on that note, the nano is better in more than a few areas.
it is available (and has been for more than nine months)
it is much smaller
it uses flash memory

i wouldn't say its all around better, but this product is boring. what about buying say the e260 for $130? doesn't that make this player pretty obsolete?
