Samsung YP-Z5F - out now in Korea
comment: 16 | Monday, June 12 (2006) 05:53PM | Posted by Lone
Samsung's YP-Z5F - the YP-Z5 with added FM tuner and voice recorder, has just been released over in Korea.

There seems to be an increase in battery life as well, rated 39 hours on the product page (compared to 35 hours for the "regular" YP-Z5). There is also a mention of OGG support (Q1-Q10), which was promised for the Z5 originally but sort of didn't happen.

Nothing else new here as far as I can tell. Why these additions weren't present in the original Z5 model is beyond me, especially considering a primary competitor, the Sansa e200, packs a radio and recorder. No mention of if/when this upgrade will hit Europe or North America.

Update: New member Nappi checked out Samsung's Swedish site and offers us a bit more clarification on what else has changed with the YP-Z5 compared to its predecessor.

The Z5F...

  • Will be bundled with Samsung Media Studio instead of Windows Media Player
  • Will support additional languages
  • Will only be available in white and pink colors
  • Will not be DRM10 compatible (only DRM9 - no subscription services support)
  • Will work on Win 98/ME/2000/XP and Mac OSX (just XP for the Z5)

Thanks, Nappi

A lot of nice upgrades that should've been in there to begin with.

It would be nice to upgrade the screen, since this screen looks bad next to the sansa :/

Maybe this will be the first device with hardware-based OGG support. That feature by itself would beat the Sansa.

Someone needs to check this thing out and report.

..or why the sansa didn't have a custom EQ, or the ability to playback in proper album order, without firmware updates almost before the first orders were shipped (still no user EQ)??

seems like these guys were off to the races without their running shoes......

OK, so my Z5 arrived yesterday and this is all beginning to get very confusing as it didn't have another letter afterwards so I'll assume I have the original version. It's the 4GB model from amazon.co.uk for Ł129.99. I've only connected it to the computer once this morning to windows vista beta 2 (don't think that would make a difference to MTP but just in case and it has WMP11). MTP showed up on the screen, I copied muisc directly across to the unit into its music folder, a few OGG files and some mp3's, it's got the correct filenames, album names etc on the player and they all play, album art showed up for the one album I copied across that had album art on. THe player also showed up with an icon of itself, not sure if that happens in XP.

So as it stands it says MTP, I can drag and drop, it plays OGG, is 4GB. As long as the battery life stands up then I'll be stoked, on't want any of the other crap on my other players that I never use, just long battery life, OGG support, drag and drop and reasonable space of 4GB.

The control system is a bit iffy but it's not as confusing as the reviews make out and certainly easy enough to pick up in a mornings use. My H10 junior often runs past the setting I want so i spend a bit of time getting it to the right place. The control on the H10 junior is better though as the select button isn't in the middle of the touch sensitive region.

Rahter than edit again. I've done some searching and found this documentation [Linky]

It sounds to me like Vista uses MTP directly and does not use this through WMP so MTP devices act like UMS systems under Vista. Am I right? Anyone know more about this as this is a bit of a guess but does mean that using devices will be significantly easier under Vista that are currently MTP complient.

Fluidity -- and the sound quality? I'm impressed with the sound quality on the little YP-U2, and I was wondering how this one sounds.

Hey Fluidity, load it up with a bunch of albums encoded in OGG so that you can test the battery life while playing that format.

I'm no audiophile. The H10 junior gives a really great sound on normal settings I reckon as does my H340. I'll give it a bit more time and listen to some more types of music and let you know but certainly no complaints so far.

Do these Z5/F devices have a proprietary USB interface?

"are you sure it played the ogg files?"

I read at the z5lounge.com forum, that it (the std. Z5) indeed supports Vorbis. It is also said, that it automatically acts in pure UMS mode if no MTP driver is installed (no WMP update, linux, mac etc.)

OK, I wasn't aware that you were able to just drag and drop files into the music folder on XP and have them just come up and work on the player when it was in MTP mode.

OGG Vorbis works fine. The main reason I believe it's not sold as having OGG support is that you are supposed to use WMP10 or 11 to copy the files across and WMP does not have native OGG support. As long as you don't want to use that to Sync and are happy to drop your albums in using explorer then OGG files play fine.
