Wixzer WXP350: Windows CE-based PMP + digicam + 300 other things
comment: 14 | Friday, June 16 (2006) 05:53AM | Posted by Robert Sinke
Why would a company want to bother with integrating digicam stuff into PMPs? Sure, there have been a few attempts before, but it seems as if 1-2MP material didn't really cut it for anyone in such devices. The other way around, now that might work. Are digicams going to gobble up the PMP market eventually? Will musicphones replace MP3 players on the long run? And most importantly, will a rare breed of purple cows colonize Mars in order to dominate the Milky Way and use as slaves to build 300ft tall milk silos? The future will tell.

Anyway, back to the subject at hand: the Wixzer WXP350. Obviously, it has a built-in CMOS camera, allowing you take pictures in "whopping" resolutions (up to 1.3MP). More interesting would have to be the fact that it runs on Windows CE 5.0, has an ARM9 + Digital Signal Processor and a 4-inch (widescreen) touch display. Also in there are a 20 or 30GB hard drive, USB-Host functionality and a lithium-polymer battery that allows the WXP350 to run for about 6 hours continuously when playing movies (10 hours for audio).

The "software" part of Wixzer's webpage suggests that we can also take advantage of functionalities such as Bluetooth, Wireless Internet, an FM radio, video & audio recording, eBook compatibility, VoIP, GPS and UMS. Doesn't sound too bad. Let's hope they can get it off of the drawing boards and into the retail stores soon enough, then.

Camera is cell phone size. Old cell phone size. Not really up to still or video. WiFi and Bluetooth is a plus.

The entire problem facing all these companies that are moving to the next stage of PMP's is beating Apple which has already dropped hints a few months back. A nice website is one thing. A PMP in the hand is entirely something else.

This looks like a paper child to me, (written out specs and a photoshopped design). But hey who knows, maybe it really does exist somewhere.

i hope this thing does actually materialize, yet it seems more like a multi-funtional pda then a pmp with the whole start menu and stuff. pmp or not, this thing seems pretty sweet.

Hmm I don't see the semi-popular(among the non ipod people) Archos 402CC listed. I hear that did a fair job recording and shooting pics and video.

My first choise was to get a PMP with Windows CE or WM5.0 or something with at least a 10gig hd but ehh nothing special has come out yet. Add video recording(ie. A2 and AV) then I might look.

That's what I was thinking; it's a lot like a pda. More powerful in some ways but not as versatile in others. Between the two i'd choose a pda.

Whats the difference between Windows CE and the Windows Mobile you get for pocket PCs?

That's a good question. It's probably pretty much the same but since it's on different hardware and maybe different processors the drivers won't be the same and software written for one probably won't work on the other without modification.
