iUbi Blue (PMP2500B) popping up at AMP3
comment: 49 | Wednesday, June 21 (2006) 09:58AM | Posted by Robert Sinke
Interesting. We're kind of in need of fresh PMP materials, so any addition to the currently-established elite (Archos AV5x0, Cowon A2 et cetera) is much-welcomed over here. Our buddies over at AdvancedMP3Players.co.uk managed to get their hands on a batch of Elentec iUbi PMP2500Bs. This player, also known as the iUbi Blue, has lots of interesting features & specs to offer. We'll list some highlights below.

First of all, there's the 4.3-inch (widescreen), 16.7m color TFT LCD. Although we thought the GUI looked a bit "blue" during the unit's first stages of development, a resolution of 480 x 272 never hurt anyone either. Best of all is probably the huge bucket of supported file formats: MPEG 1, 2, 4 DivX 3.X, DivX 4.X, DivX 5.X, Svid, WMV9, H.264, AVI, OGM, WMV 7, 8, MOV and Real video. Need more? Sure, MP3, WMA, WAV, OGG, AC-3, ASF, AAC-LC, G.726 for video is also included in the package deal. Output resolutions upto 720 x 480 pixels (@30fps) and output volumes of 32mW per channel (via a Wolfson 3D sound chip) bolster the 2500B's impressive set of specs.

What's more, the 2500B can record video through TV-in (MPEG4, 640x480 @ 30fps) and it has a USB-OTG port built-in (so one can transfer data from one USB device to the Blue and vice versa). And its name wasn't picked randomly either - the device comes with bluetooth support for wireless headphones, allowing us to get rid of the ordinary cable bunch whilst listening to the player's audio/video contents.

Surely, this thing won't last for more than a few hours per charge? Wrong, it'll play video files for 8 hours continuously and audio tracks fro about 15 hours in a row. At 131 x 80 x 19mm and weighing 260 grams, the iUbi Blue can hardly be regarded as a "fat bastard" either (Cowon A2: 133 x 78 x 22mm, 298 grams). Surprisingly so, the PMP2500B is pretty affordable too, at 249UKP (30GB). Compared to AMP3's 309UKP & 319UKP retail prices for the Archos AV530 and the 30GB Cowon A2 respectively... we can safely say that the iUbi Blue looks like a very interesting deal... on paper.

Only being available on a pre-order basis right now, we'll keep our eyes peeled for the Blue's final release (end of the month). And we're sure some of you will do exactly the same.

Wow...sounds very promising indeed, with impressive batt life. Probably less, as these companies never measure by real life usage

Will keep my eye on this one

Interesting this looks very impressive, did you say it comes with bluetooth headphones or did you mean it has support. Because if it came with bluetooth headphones that would be overly impressive especially at that price.

AMP3 are good at providing specialist equipment.

There prices are usually undercut for normal mp3 player i.e. u10, nano and most headphones.

I would say to AMP3 is to concentrate more on niche stuff like this and advertise it in your shop, don't try to concentrate to hard on that mass market stuff.

hmmm I think it comes with regular earphones, reading through the "included" section. So I've altered that sentence a bit.

Looks very good. I really like the wide codec support and that it weighs 260 grams. But I'm afraid I will never see it in stores considering I've never seen any other iubi products here in Holland.

Can somebody convert those prices to dollars?

to convert: [Linky]
or even google 249 gpb to usd

Now a question...I´m from Brasil, and will be travelling to Paris and Athens in late July-early August
I was considering buying a Cowon A2, but this seems really promising...especially the bluetooth headset, even if its not bundled.

You people think there´s anychance this thing will get a review anywhere until then? And if I´ll be able to buy one in the places I´ll be visiting?

Wow, the list of supported codecs is beyond impressive. It even looks very pretty, which is nice and surprising alongside the high feature set.

Seriously interested. Which is making my wallet shy away in pain...

no XViD support or am I missing something?
seriously sexy player. It'd be nice if US-based e-tailers pick it up, which'd make the price more realistic for anybody with a currency weaker than the GBP. If it did get picked up in the USA, it'd probably retail for like 275 bucks, based on those other prices in GBP compared to USD...
but 275 bucks for a PMP, especially one so appealing, is doubtful at best

I'm not sure if "svid" is a typo which should read "XviD" instead. I think it could very well be a typo indeed (copy-pasted it right from AMP3's spec page, so...).

And XooM hits it on the spot - conversion of currencies is useless without comparing relevant price points to each other. It is pretty damn cheap to British/European standards, so it's bound to be cheap enough in the US as well - if it'll ever make it to there.

I think we'll do a review on this one, seems justifiable.

Spec looks incredible and at that price could be a very serious contender to the A2.

Some of the guys at the iAudiophile.net were saying this is using the same chip and some of the other hardware the A2 uses(maybe there will be frimware release that enables more codec support?). The name A2+(I think it was that) was being also thrown around or something. The only thing I and surely know many want to know is how reliable is iUbi, how is their tech support and so forth. I would be suprised if their firmware updates are as frequent as Cowons.

I used to (shortly) own an iUbi PMP2020 - this was a fantasic PMP... in theory. it had all kinds of gimmicks, ranging from a touch screen (very unique back then in 2004) to videorecording to a removable battery and several PIM functions.

The problem was... none of it really worked the way it was supposed to work. Videorecording was terrible, quality-wise, the touch screen didn't seem too responsive, some of the PIM stuff just sat there and stared at me.

When running into iUbi's stand at the 2005 CeBIT, they were surprised to find out that someone had actually owned the thing - they couldn't answer any of my specific questions, though. The 2020 went out faster than it ever went in (in where? well, you know).

Then, almost one year later, I published the first article on the PMP2500 and someone from Elentec actually sent me an email, providing me with additional information on the thing. We managed to meet up during the last CeBIT as well. The company was doing great in comparison to last year and their hardware has improved significantly. Plus, the ppl over there actually knew what these PMP thingies were supposed to do and how they worked et al.

Now, seeing as how crowded the booth was at most times, Martin and I only had like 10 minutes to play around with the PMP2500, which was still in beta phase back then. Although the GUI looked very bland, the whole "feel" of the thing was pretty impressive. Naturally, there was no time to hunt down any bugs - nor was there really a point to such endeavours (seeing as how it was still a beta unit).

The hardware is perfectly in order, afaik. The question would indeed have to be: did the software department do its homework properly? We'll find out... in a moment .

A comment on Roger767's comment. Iubi most certainly is available in the Netherlands. I have seem their PMP's for sale both at Media Markt and Lukas Klamer (although they might not sell them anymore as that was a, now, older model.

one word WOW.... this mite actaulli be a serious contender to the A2... the A2 is a grea device but i wanted it to support H.264... and it's battery life isn't relli that true in real life... The specs are almost the same in terms of codec support but this is even smaller and has Bluetooth... can u connect to other things other than headphones via Bluetooth, like phones and stuff and act as a host? if so WOWOWOWOW..... this is truly b something i will look out for

Any word on soft subtitle support?

ie .srt, .sub, .idx files?

A lot of my movies are in other languages, so this is a major sticking point for me. I like the Cowon A2 or the iStation v43 because they support subtitles.

I don't get it!

On the spec site of AMP3 it says
Management Software Required: No

But still it also says
Linux OS Support: No
PC / Mac Compatibility: PC only
Operating System Compatibility: Windows 98SE, ME, 2000 with service pack 3, XP

Why doesn't it have support for UMS? That's the only thing stoping me from loving and pre ordering this unit. I've been looking for the perfect player for so long, and it's always one thing that is missing from any player!

Does anyone have any contacts inside iUbi they could ask about this..? That would be great!

Robert Sinke

Jun 23 (2006) 02:56PM

to answer some questions:

- it is UMS-compatible, so it should work for Macs too - just hasn't been tested/verified yet.

- Bluetooth earphones do not come bundled with it. However AMP3 will sell manufacturer-recommended BT earphones at a "discount bundle" price.

- "Svid" was indeed a typ0, it should read "XviD". So it also supports XviD then.

- No user-removable battery or DMB.

- Screen quality is "on-par with that of the AV500, if not slightly better", according to AMP3, who have played with the Blue for quite a while.

- First shipment's rolling in sometime next week.

- We will review this device ASAP.

Ok, thanks a lot for that info, Robert! That makes this unit complete!

"No user-removable battery or DMB."

Accordig to the iUbi website you can add DMB with an antenna that you connect to it. Take a look at the third tab on this page: [Linky]

"Please check if it has soft subtitle support. If so, I'll be buying it in a heartbeat."

I don't know what it means, but it does say it has support for subtitles/lyrics near the bottom of this page: [Linky]

forteller: I don't know what it means, but it does say it has support for subtitles/lyrics near the bottom of this page: [Linky]

Soft subtitles are basically .srt or .sub or .idx files that are subtitles for the movie you are watching. They are not hard-encoded into the image frame in the video, but instead overlayed like a real DVD player. Very useful when watching movies from other countries where you want to be able to turn on/off the subtitles.

Subtitle/lyric support does sound like it is what I need, however. Lyrics are used for karaoke videos/tracks, much like subtitles (and maybe even support coloring of the lyrics based on when you are supposed to sing them, etc). According to that page, it looks like the player supports .smi, which is a type of subtitle file.

Well, seems like this is set. I'll be getting this.

The only problem with getting new stock...is looking like you're not working (from the customer perspective)
