comment: 32 | Monday, June 26 (2006) 08:59PM | Posted by Robert Sinke
Hey, remember that upcoming PMP from Yukyung, the Viliv P2? No? Well, pay attention then.

  • AMD Alchemy processor
  • Touch screen
  • Measures 142mm x 79mm x 23~25mm
  • Weighs 280 grams
  • Dual OS, WIN CE 5.0 Core, Linux compatible
  • Mobile Flash lite 2.0
  • 4.3-inch, 480 x 272, 16m color TFT LCD
  • USB 2.0, USB 2.0 Host, USB OTG
  • HDD: 20G / 30G
  • Lithium Polymer battery, 3.7V, 3500mAh, 4700mA/h including add-on (?)
  • Battery life 4-7 hours for video, 7-10 for audio (?)
  • SMI, SRT support for captions
  • DivX All version , Xvid , MPEG1/2/4, ASF, WMV 7/8 (320 x 240), WMV 9 (720 x 480)
  • Audio support: MP3, WMA, OGG (up to Q10), AC3, PCM(WAV,AIFF), AAC(MPEG 2 & 4)
  • Output: Stereo (AC3 5.1 ch Stereo Out)
  • Max. output: 45mW (22.5mW + 22.5mW)
  • S/N ratio: 97 dB
  • Voice recording, line-in encoding
  • TV-out: NTSL / PAL, CVBS (S-Video, RGB)
  • Picture support: JPEG, BMP (max res. 4000 x 3000)
  • Several PIMS functions, support for PDF files, Office files and whatnot
  • GPS Navigation, DMB optional

This is just a short list of features and specs... the full list goes on and on and on... but our translation software is going insane when attempting to make sense of it all. Not sure if all of the above is 100% right either (hence the occasional question mark) but it should cover the "basics", heh .

As you can see, this (rather big) thing is loaded with functionality. There will be a few versions to choose from, ranging from the "simple" edition (398k-443k Won for 20 and 30GB respectively) to the "P2 DMB Navi" (643/688k won). All looking very sweet and juicy so go take a look at all the pretty (weird) pictures already!

Dual os? What are they? I know one is wm5.0 the other? To bad the battery life sucks from what looks of it. And seeing this is a wm5 device you know the touch screen is going to be good.

Utew You can start dancing now, cause they do support them + USB wireless LAN + (maybe)WIBRO

....hopefully the batt life is wrong for audio....

Well it is 10 hrs for large batt. (not sure for capacity)

Utew, I asked this question before (in another comment section) and didn't really get an answer.

Do you really think wireless headphones are going to work on these portable players. The headphones (and you will need headphones to hold the extra electronics and battery, no earbuds here) will be quite large and have relatively short listen times (the stuff I could find on the web had ranges of ~6-8 hours). In addition, the extra draw on the battery of the DAP to drive the wireless signal will really cut down on battery time (probably <8-10 hours of total listening, I thought I found where a Bluetooth amp {edit: amp was a poor choice of words, should have used Bluetooth transceiver} requires about 300mW of power to run, but I could be wrong). I understand many customers wanting wireless connections to their DAP, I just don't see the current technology giving a result that people will be willing to pay the extra money for. What are you thoughts?

same here... this just looks too chunky too me... i already consider my A2 as big if this is bigger it's not exactly a "Portable" Multimedia Player.

What do you mean by a "Bluetooth amp"? If the audio signal is being sent wirelessly, then it does not need to be amplified (or rather, it wouldn't help), correct? The headphones would have to do that (which probably explains the poor battery life of bluetooth headphones).

If I am correct, then this also means that the DAP could save some battery power by not amplifying the audio signal to compensate for the cost of transmitting a wireless signal. Also, the Bluetooth transmission from a DAP can (and probably should) be relatively weak, maybe with a 3m range rather than 10m, which should also save a bit of power.

sitandstare,

Amp was probably a bad choice of words. What I meant, was the Bluetooth transceiver, the chip in the DAP that would send and receive the wireless signals. These things use considerable more power (again, I believe this is something like 300mW) than the music amplification circuit (which uses at most 60-75mW). Ask anyone who uses a portable Bluetooth device, be it smartphone, pocket PC, GPS system. Whenever the wireless connection is on (whether it's WiFi, Bluetooth, Rf), battery life is greatly reduced. And battery life, particularly long battery life, is one of the most hotly discussed topics on forum/comment section.

That doesn't even address the issue of now having two different (and mostly like proprietary) batteries, two different charging systems, etc. that come with having two battery powered devices. I still don't see wireless headphones catching on in a big way. They have already been out for at least two years (see review link below) and I don't read much about them here (except that several people would like to have them).

video battery life seems impressive if its 7, the audio, not so much. touch screen i dont like though, its pretty much forcing me to smudge up the screen.

sdsdv10, Yep battery life with bluetooth is a concern, but not insurmountable, bluetooth chips are becoming a lot more energy efficient as the tech matures...and the headphones do the heavy lifting of amplification of the audio signal.. Creative's latest wireless headphones are here... [Linky]
, but we should see Bluetooth 2.0 integrated soon...

..sorry if this veered off-topic a bit... but I thnik wireless headphone support will be one of the next big things.. we shall see anyway...

Personally, I would be willing to sacrifice a couple of hours of battery runtime for bluetooth integration, if it came to that.. would anyone else? ..or am I all wet on this?

if you could have wireless in ear bud i wud buy them straight away ( i know they would be easly lost if they fell out of yuor ears....but my in ear h/f havent ever fallen out, so id take the risk )

Same as everything under the sun some people like the idea some dont...its all to do with peoples priorties..so sdsdv10 when you ask "do i think they will work"
MY answer is yes..and once Apple release them they will be like Utew says "the next big thing"

as i believe they will realease intergrated bluetooth h/f technology in there next touch screen PMP/ video player!!)

I apologize too, for taking this off topic. Just something I have been very interested in. Not currently in the market for a PMP, just looking for the right DAP. As noted by previous posters, hopefully this unit does a better job than P1 did. I remember all the hype and then it just quietly disappeared...

pecker, I don't think you will get wireless earbuds anytime soon. Here's most everything you need to fit in the package; speaker, amplifier (to drive speaker), wireless reciever and battery. I don't care how good a design/engineering group Apple (or anyone esle) has, your are not going to fit all that into an earbud sized package within the next decade, at least.

Apple's engineering group is limited to assembling and programming chips made from other companies. So don't look for anything development from them. On the other hand, they can make it, because the technology is out there. It is just very expensive to do something like this. This device is missing h.264, or I would definitely buy it over the V10...right now, they are kinda even.

Well, if I was going to get a pmp it'd have to be compact. I already have various pda's that can play video so to justify the purchase of a pmp it would have to have something those don't. Something small, relatively big screen, good codec support, and long battery life would be easier to carry and at least come close to the capability of a pda as far as video and audio. Things like the Clix, Meizu M6 and Aigo 868.

There are to many better pmps than this...i would choose the v10 or av500...

(sdsdv10.....i ment apple would release normal bluetooth headphones....not in ear, i wud just like them )

lol ya! A2!!! LOL but ya i fink Bluetooth headphones r the future... but they just have to fix some of the energy consuption issues... it has already come a long way... i noe but it's still not THAT effiecient battery wise... i was almost even gonna get the Logitech Bluetooth Headphones cuz i could've gotten them for around $40 CAD but i backed off cuz of the reviews on the bad build quality of the back headband thing... some even just split in half in like 2 months... ekk
