Supportplus PMP

You probably have never heard of Supportplus, but apparently they have been making low-end flash mp3 players in the Dutch market for a while now. I dont't know about you, but, to me, "supportplus" sounds more like a software name rather than a DAP manufactuer.

The new PMP doesnt actually have its own name. Its just listed as a 20gb Portable Media Player.

Key Specs:

* Capacity: 20GB internal 1.8" HDD
* LCD: 3.5" TFT
* Video resolution: MAX. 640 x 480
* Video recording: 640 x 480 (30fps)/ 320 x 240 (30fps)
* File support: MPEG4, AVI, DIVX, MP3, WMA, ASF, OGG, JPEG, BMP, GIF
* Camera module: 1.3M pixel CMOS
* USB2.0 mass storage device
* Playback time: Up to 5 hrs (Video)
* Charging time: about 3 hrs (cradle or DC adaptor)
* FM tuner: default: 76~108MHz (worldwide CH)
* MP3 encoding: 32Kbps (Voice Rec)/ 128Kbps (line-Rec)
* High sensitive FM tuner & FM recording
* Lyrics & Subtitle display
* Conventient recharging by cradle (built-in battery)

So essentially its a chunktastic player with a useless camera, but it does have nice resolution and codec support.

If it finds your fancy, it can be had for in Holland for prices ranging from 300 euros to 350 euros.

Thanks to janbemel

the main drawbacks on this one: 320x240 screen, mediocre GUI, and lack of AC3 support. however build quality was quite good on the pre-production model we played with at CES 2004. you can get these rebrands for ~$200 now vs. the original $600 MSRP.. but still, i would much rather spend a little extra for the Cowon A2.

It is quite interesting to know more about the origin of such a PMP when it suddenly appears in some Internet shops here in The Netherlands. If I had not submitted it as a news item here on DAP Review, I wouldn't have known what it's really about. I notice that Austin is the dedicated expert here, who gives a usable opinion about the device. In the meantime I succeeded to obtain the User Manual in PDF of the Sorell SV10, so that I can see what's really possible. I, too, have an A2, and my conclusion is, that the Cowon A2 is more advanced, but that this SupportPlus PMP, certainly when you place it in the period when it first appeared as the Sorell SV10, is quite a good piece of electronics. By the way, it would be interesting if someone could give an URL where the firmware of the device can be downloaded.

Thank you guys for this website! I saw this player for $175. US [Linky] and was looking for more information on it yet could not find it until I arrived here. Could not even access the SupportPlus web site. Thanks for all the info!

Well, I could not stop my curiosity, and got me this PMP, simply to compare it with my major PMP, the Cowon A2. On iAudiophile I made the question "Will this be a tough competitor to the A2?". My first impression clearly says "No". It can do far less, and the things it does are of less quality compared to the Cowon. Changing MP3 files during music playback, however, goes clearly quicker. If there is any interest over here, I could post a User Review of it in a couple of weeks. But maybe it's not fair to compare this SupportPlus device with that top PMP from Cowon.

Well, I bought this thing waaay out where I live in Canada, and I can say -- I am satisfied. It was cheap, looks alright, and it can play/record videos and the like -- my one question is directed to janbemel: which codec of videos does it support exactly? I've got some MPEG4 and AVI and DIVX converters, but nothing will work properly on the player. Which format do you use?

Thanks,

-Jag

i've had the supportplus PMP for about a month now and I will say it's good and bad. for the price it's great.

pluses: 20GB microdrive thing (the hard drive costs ~$90 alone), 640x480 15fps video capture, sound quality, screen is very bright and high quality, battery life, price $169.

minues: very buggy video playback. records videos in ASF format which sucks for editing/seeking large files. mp3 random playback is hardly random. it seems to go through a "sequential" random meaning anytime you use random, it goes through it's RANDOM list of songs in the same order, no matter which song you start with. UI is poor.

so i would very happy with this if the playback bugginess was fixed, but im skeptical that a new bios will be released.

to the user asking which DIVX codec works best, i've found normal DIVX to be most compatible with MP3 audio. although it still glitches. the problem with the video playback is it plays back like the file is corrupt (artifacting, sometimes crashing out).. if one re-encodes to DIVX/MP3 it helps but i bought it thinking it could play these files without re-encoding so this is a huge minus.

i've posted the sorell bios here:
[Linky]

although i've found that it doesn't fix any of the video playback bugs
