Archos 404/604 press release
comment: 14 | Wednesday, August 16 (2006) 03:25PM | Posted by Lone
Archos has officially announced their 404 and 604 PMPs, which we got a good look at recently. According to the press release the "extreme capacity" 504 model will be unveiled at a later date. There's also a mention of the UK suggested retail price: £219.99 and £269.99 for the 404 and 604, respectively (£69.99 for the recording module).

Announced separately today, the 30GB 404 and 604 products offer extreme portability and the latest technologies, and are available immediately. The 404 is one of the thinnest and most affordable portable video players on the market today at only 1.5 cm thick. The 604 features an extra sharp 4.3-inch wide-screen display, removable battery and kick-stand for easy viewing. ARCHOS is extending the 404 with an integrated camera and camcorder, and the 604 with integrated wireless, touch screen and other productivity features later this year. Details on those products, and the extreme capacity 504, will be
announced later.

It looks like the 604 with WiFi and touch screen additions will be similar to Archos' old PMA430, which while incredibly capable, was also incredibly pricey. Also interesting is the listed "productivity features." Will these be PDA-like contact/calendar functions, or will the player perhaps have the ability to view/edit MS Office documents on-the-fly?

Does anyone know if any brick and mortar stores carry Archos? When these make it to the US, I would like to play with one.

Ive never seen one. In fact, Ive never met anyone who even had an archos DAP or knew what it was. I always get the "is that the new ipod" question. Shit, look at it. Does it look like an ipod?

My local CompUSA has the AV500, AV700, and the 402. I really liked the 500 and the 402. The 700 is way to big. Had no idea it was that huge. Hopefully they will also stock the new lineup.

I hate that Archos is ignoring the 202 line. Even though they came out with the XS202S recently I haven't seen it anywhere, and it wasn't much of an improvement anyway.

LOL... OGG all the way... so far all of my remaining DAPs play OGG LOL... WiFi and a touchscreen are a welcome addition since the 404/604 don't add much feature-wize compared to the AV500... maybe a next generation V43 if they make it open source and don't price it so that only people with $500,000 salaries can afford it like the PMA403...

Thanks for the replies (re: brick and mortar stores carrying Archos). No Fry's or Good Guys here in Michigan. I have been to the local CompUSA, but never saw an Archos unit (only Apple, Samsung, SanDisk and Creative on display). Too far from NYC to make it J&R. I do have a Sharper Image within ~25 miles. I will have to give them a call and see if they stock DAPs.

this can be better than the v43 because i trust archos more with my money than i-station. it will be intresting to see what the p2 and this come to be..... gps in the 604 would be a welcome accessory. an normal gps unit costs $800, a pmp is $500-600 with gps.

Later on in the year, well I'd definitely wait till then then when these will go down in price and you can decide if the ones with updated features are worht paying more for. Can't help thinking by announcing how they'll be improved at this stage they are shooting themselves in the foot a bit. Aplles secrecy pisses me off but its a much better idea business wise.

It seems like the Archos 504 is going to be available in 40 GB, 80 GB, and 160 GB capacities. WOW. [Linky]
