MobiBlu BOXON
comment: 18 | Thursday, August 24 (2006) 11:39AM | Posted by Austin Vaughan
MobiBlu is cooking up an interesting new device that they're calling the BOXON. Little is know about this thing yet - at least, among those of us who can't decipher Korean. All I can figure out from this page of strange scribblings and wonderful pictures is that it has a 1.7-inch OLED screen, comes with 256mb of flash memory, has an FM radio, and plays MP3s. It also has some kind of voice-over-iP function and a dictionary mode... although how these are implemented is kind of a puzzle. Could be just a couple of PC applications that come pre-loaded in memory.

The layout of the controls is rather unusual, with half of them being stuck on the backside. The player does appear to be pretty small and with the screen taking up most of the face, perhaps it was as good a place to put them as any. You'd probably remember what each of them do by feel after awhile, but I imagine it would be a bit chaotic at first.

Earlier this month, AVING.net had a short article about the BOXON, stating that it supports ebooks (text reading), video playback, image display, and has an English-Korean dictionay. Supposedly, it's due out this month in Korea, although it has yet to appear on MobiBlu's website.

More pics HERE.

looks intresting... hopefully it's battery life will be okay but 256MB seems kinda small by today's standards...

Looks really cute ... love the Now Playing screen and the size and how the screen takes up most of the front. I would hope, though, that MobiBlu would go bigger than a measly 256MB! Pam

If there is a way to get it in 2-4GB, I'm interested because it looks nice otherwise.

i hate how most of the players have the edges totally rounded off like this and the ipod video. it looks much better and your only adding on a little bit off space.

how can this player have so many features on it, and only have 256MB?? UNless, it actually has 2GB of memory, but 1.75GB of it is used up by it's firmware....

the buttons on the back are OK, except that they could be a hassle to operate if the thing is on a belt clip, or armband for running...

That control layout doesn't look all that good to me. It's funny how they're last release was that super thin RAZR like player and then they make this chubby looking one.

the ipod video isn't very rounded off. the front edge is actually straight. if anyone is embracing the rounded edges its creative.

round edges on the parts of the player that touch your hand make sense. i think creatives players are too rounded for my tastes, but by comparison, the ipods are all pretty staight edged. the 3g ipod was rounded all around, but newer generations have the straight cut face.

It's great to finally see more pictures of it! Engadget and ABi wrote about it in early August when only this pic was available. Seeing what the device looks like when it's actually turned on makes it a lot more appealing (despite the measly memory).

This could be a great dap, if that's what it is. VOiP? Does that mean it has WiFi? Is it a pocketPC? If it's a dap, why does it have only 256MB, that's going back 2 years. It appears to elongate when you use the dictionary; that's a cool feature. I like the design, but i'm not clear on what it is.

The U10 has been brewing competition in Korea. It's so popular here. The BOXON seems to look pretty good. I'm worried about two things. The controls and the capacity. I'm glad I'm Korean, I can read scribbles.

PS: The review is in Korean, not Chinese.

Looks very sexy but for a 256MB unit the screen is complete overkill IMO.
What's the point? To see the handfull of ID3 tags scroll in 260k alternating colors? You can't put a movie on it and the buttons are too awkward for games.
I have a 256MB unit with monochrome screen and it's plenty for me. (Zen Nano +)
That said I'm pretty sure bigger capacities will be available for launch.
